HELP - HDMI, DVD, Receiver audio connection

Hi,

I am back after a long time away. Can anyone help me? I am getting a new TV (Sony 46" LCD with 1080p w/ HDMI). My new DVD player will have HDMI as well. However, my Yamaha RXV2500 does not have HDMI. I am not getting a new receiver.

I want to take advantage of the HDMI-quality video signal from my DVD player, so I will connect the HDMI from the DVD directly to the TV (as opposed to running it thru my receiver, since, as I said, my receiver does not have HDMI).

However, I want to run the digital coax from my DVD player to my receiver to get the best possible audio.

Is the audio signal from the DVD player a "one or the other" proposition? In other words, will the audio signal only go thru the HDMI cable OR the digital coax, but not both at the same time? Or, can I do as I have planned by letting the video travel thru the HDMI from DVD player to TV and, simultaneously, have the digital audio running from the DVD's digital coax jack to the my receiver?

Does that make sense? I guess I was thinking that if I have a HDMI out cable from ym DVD player to my TV, it might effectively "turn off" any audio output from the DVD's digital coax output????

Thanks for any help on this.

Hello

Welcome back

You should be all set, Simply connecting the HDMI cable to your DVD player should not inactivate the other Audio outs (Coax, Toslink, rca etc..)

you may want to turn the volume all the way down on your TV when you watch though...the HDMI will send the audio track to the TV and it may give you an odd sound along with the recievers audio.

good luck!

gcmarshall, your proposed setup should work fine. All the audio outputs on the cable box are "live" all the time. I run a DVI connection from the cable box to the plasma for video, the analog two channel connection from the cable box to the plasma (so I don't have to fire up the whole system every time I watch TV) and an optical connection from the cable box to the receiver for when I want to watch TV using the whole system.

FYI, I once had the plasma speakers are on and the audio system on at the same time and it sounded horrible.
