Hi keema,
Your receiver is not at all a bad receiver. Your question is lacking in what you mean by a "good" receiver. What are you going to do with it? What room? Size of room, etc.
It has good inputs, decent power with matched speakers and should provide enjoyable sound.
Speaker matching is rather difficult. Most have their preferences, mine is Paradigm and the Atoms, Titans, should be well matched. But what are you looking for the speakers to do? Are you looking for 2 channel stereo and/or HT audio.

I have the Yamaha RX-V659 and it is a major step up in audio compared to the Sony and old Technics I was using.

Here are some links, hope they are helpful.
PS: do a google search for "reviews of Yamaha RX-V457" and see what pops up, you may be surprised.

thanks kai for ur reply...
well im gonna use it for HT. can my yammy drive a floorstanding speakers?

ur receiver is the newer models right? they say these models now are good in audio compared to the lower models...

my room size is 20sq.m.

actually i am using a 6.1 sat/sub speakers..but for me it sounds small and lacks bass. also surround sounds short...so i think upgrading my speakers is what i need to do...

If its a satillite set-up then the amp wouldn't be the reason of the 'lack of bass'
as the subwoofer is active. So i would be looking at your speaker set-up. Possibly subwoofer placement, if you place it close to a wall the bass will be louder but not as natural. What is the rated RMS of your system including the sub?

Your Yamaha is a nice entry level receiver. It will power a set of 8 ohm, sensitive floorstanders without a problem. You can get bass from this receiver if you match it up with a set of towers with proper specs.

Look for 8 ohm rated towers, as well as an spl level of 93dB or higher. This would be important if you want to listen to two channel music without a subwoofer.

You can also get very good sound using bass management, which means relying on your Yamaha to power your speakers from 80 or 100Hz on up. The subwoofer would handle everything from 80 or 100Hz down. A majority of your power goes into driving bass. When the receiver doesn't have to handle frequencies under 80-100Hz, everythign will sound better.

An upgraded subwoofer is all you may need for now. Check out some of the entry level HSU models.

What are your current speakers? That info will make a difference regarding any comments in that area.

Quality of your sound is also dependent on how hard you push the receiver and speakers. If you are using entry level speakers and are pushing them and the receiver to their limits you will have audio degradation...poor sound...
Your receiver will work fine at normal, or moderately above normal, listening levels for tv HT and music with good quality speakers.

I think you would benefit from adding towers...if you're using your setup primarily for HT then take a look at the Klipsch's since their sensitivity is sooo good.....my rf-35's are 98! So they drive very easily.....try demoing them somewhere or try the rf-25's....actually they jsut came out with new models that I've heard are not quite as bright as the older ones....they may be a good fit for you.

explain your room dimensions a little better, e.g. width x length x height

Well with the additional information keema is providing I would say at this point, some info is still lacking and spotty, that your receiver, while a good piece of equiptment, is not going to handle your audio needs now and especially in the future. Sounds like you are pushing your receiver close to its' limits and adding towers, even efficient speakers, will further strain your receiver and not do your speakers any good either.

I am not familiar with your speakers.

You may want to relegate your current system to a bedroom, game room, etc. system and start planning a new HT system that will provide you with the power you need for quality sound at higher levels and to power tower speakers.

Your current system, while ok, does not seem to be meeting your requirements so it may be time to start dreaming, planning, researching, budgeting and talking about it in forums such as these.

Good luck and keep us informed.
