Help! DVD audio fades in and out...

Hello, wondering if anyone can help...

My surround sound seems to fade to quiet when someone is talking and minimal surrounding sounds (an example might be when someone is talking and a twig breaks because someone steps on it, or when a pistol or gun is cocked). It comes back to normal pretty fast but it happens throughout the entire movie. It doesn't seem to happen much when there is quite a bit of action and stuff going on. I've tried changing settings on my receiver and DVD player and nothing seems to help. It also seems to be on random movie (not sure about that though).

Please, can anyone help!

Here is my setup:

Sony STR-DE598 Receiver
Sony DVP-NC650V DVD Player
Orb Audio Speakers (although recently purchased. Previously had Sony towers and had the same problem.)

Not all movies have a lot of sound in the surrounds. Does this happen with all movies or only specific ones? On the movies where it happens, have you tried rewinding and relistening? Does it always happen for that scene or just sometimes?

Also, if you list a movie or two and the specific scenes you are noticing this on, others can tell you if that's how it sounds on their systems too. Try watching a scene from a movie with a lot of action in the surrounds to see if it drops out or plays.

Movies

Thanks for the reply. My wife and I are watching The Rundown right now and the part we noticed it most was the beginning when they are in the club naming the football players.

Another movie that I can pull of the top of my head is the beginning of Underworld: Evolution. The very beginning when Selene is talking about their situation.

I'll have to check out those movies late tomorrow night and see what my system does.

I watched the scene in the beginning of Underworld:Evolution when selene is talking while the opening credits roll. The first part of it has some music then after about 20-30 seconds there is little happening, just occasional bursts of music for emphasis. Can't locate my copy of the Rundown.

Have you tried level matching your speakers? If the surrounds are set too low, you may only be hearing the loudest portions.

Dynamic range

Check if you have the "night mode" or other setting engaged which is causing the receiver to limit the dynamic range of the audio.

I don't have a night mode on my receiver (I don't think). Still have yet to figure out what the problem is...

Must be some kind of receiver issue. Maybe it's the DVD player? I vaguely recall this happening on my older receiver (it was a Sony 5.1). Do you think it may be the DVD Player??
