Help deciding on sub for a large room

I have a new room upstairs that is my office/studio as well as a place for my wife and I to have movie night a few days/wk. I have ordered some Ascend Acoustics Sierra-1's for the L/C/R and will pair them with the HTM-200's for surround. It is a large room at 35x18 and around 4700 cu/ft. Hardwood floors. We usually watch movies at around -10db or so, so not necessarily too loud, but we enjoy the nice thump in the chest of a good sub. I also want it for nice accurate response for music. I currently have a SVS SB12 downstairs that I like but need more up here. Size/appearance is a concern as I also host clients occasionally as well as the wife factor.

I have been looking at the Rythmic E15hp but am not finding much information on it. I see that a lot of people recommend the FV15-hp but was hoping to find something a little smaller even if I have to lose a little volume... that and I don't particularly like the 'chuff' you can get from a ported sub... but I haven't heard many of these better ported subs. I considered the SVS PB13 also but is $400 more than the E15HP. How does the E15HP stack up to these two? Or possibly the HSU VTF-3?

Anyone have any suggestions here?

Thanks!

Pat

Hi, Pat. I have zero experience with Rythmik, so I'm not making a recommendation - but I wanted to mention that SVS does (or at least did) give a discount for return customers. Plus, their prices include shipping. Once you take that into account, The PB13 isn't $400 more than the E15HP (and less of a difference if you go for gloss black). It's still more, though. :)

Ah... You're right on the shipping Adam! Thx. I may have to give them a call and see what they are willing to do for a repeat customer!

What's your seating distance to the LCRs? That's a pretty good sized room for speakers in the 86dB sensitivity range.

"Hardwood floors" sounds like you might mean "no acoustic treatment", no?

Seating distand is 12' to the L/C/R's. And I just double checked my room measurements... I added wrong:rolleyes:... it's 35x18 with a total volume of about 4700 cu/ft. (edited above)

Correct... no acoustic treatments.

Looks like it'll be delivered tomorrow. Although the Sierra-1's won't be here until next week. It's going to sound a little unbalanced without the mains :D

Got everything hooked up to the Yamaha RX-A730 with Sierra-1's L/C/R and did a quick run on the Audyssy correction program. For some reason Audyssy kept the power of the sub VERY low. Did a manual setting and WOW!!! this thing came alive!!

Very impressed! Nice clean, tight bass with music and house shaking thumps with movies. Will still play with the levels to get everything perfectly balanced but these are all keepers.

Totally happy!

I was actually keeping my expectations in check because of the size of the room. Glad to see I didn't have to worry about it and have to give much thanks to the people here who helped guide me!!

I am glad to hear you are happy, we give people advice constantly and its good to hear back from them.. I have gotten a bunch of PMs saying how happy people are we recommended Ascend Acoustics they make an impressive product for the money, I own almost every product they sell {minus the sierra towers, but I'm sure I will end up with a set soon enough}...

Now we just need some pics...
