Hi. I'm very new to the world of A/V, but I'm an "ex-audiophile..." I used to own some Hales Signatures and a Muse Model 18 sub, combined with some Krell amplification, Mod Squad pre, and other various odds and ends (phonograph, cd-players, etc)... Anyway, travel forced me to sell everything off, but now I'm back and looking to get into 5.1 and more A/V versus 2-channel. I've read so much in the past month or so, that I think I'm actually overloading my brain with information... making it all but impossible to make a decision. I came across this board and thought I'd post for some experienced advice and thoughts from others that may or may not have been in a similar situation. While I would love to own Krell seperates or a Lexicon Receiver, but budget these days is far more average, as is my apartment. I still own some Legacy Audio Studios, which I think I'll keep as my main speakers, but I guess I'm open to suggestions on that, too. I've sort of narrowed down my choices of receivers to be: Denon 3805, Denon 3806, Marantz SR-8500. Any thoughts?? I picture watching a lot of movies, but mainly listening to music. Being honest with myself, I'll most likely be using my MP3 player as the main source (convenience/simplicity vs. sound quality). Well, I've probaby lost most of you by now, but if not and you have some advice, it sure is appreciated!! Thanks!

All of those are good choices however look at some other options. I would consider some of the Pioneer Elite stuff. Also consider getting something with firewire audio. Based on what you said I would also consider the Pioneer vsx-74txvi. I relized that running video through your reciever may seem backward but what other components do you have? Is you MP3 player an ipod? Some of the best bargins I have seen are the pioneer VSX-56txi and the DV-47Ai. Together they will blow your mind

Other options

Good choices. I would also add the Yamaha RX-V2500 or RX-V2600. I would only consider the Yamaha 2600 or Denon 3806 if you have multiple HDMI devices and MUST have HDMI switching on your receiver.

Also the new HK models like the AVR-440 have a speacial port for connecting an i-pod which may be of some value to you. For files from your PC, all you need is a video card that has a digital coax or optical output for connection to your receiver.
