Help connecting subwoofer

I have an old (1990) Pioneer VSX-D1S Pro Logic receiver; I finally decided to add a powered subwoofer (BA pv700) using appropriate subwoofer RCA cable
from a jack marked center woofer out on the receiver. When playing CDs I got the expected sound from the sub, but when I switched to DVDs, I only got low-grade muffled sound from the sub, but regular (front) speakers sounded fine including bass. I removed the RCA cable and connected the sub to the receiver using regular speaker wire to the front line-level speaker inputs. Now I get sound from the subwoofer. Why didn't I get sound to the sub using the RCA cable hookup? (It worked on CDs, but not DVDs).There is no speaker setup menu on this old receiver; I changed the center channel from wide to normal (no small setting), but this didn't change anything. Any ideas before I simply junk this fine old receiver for a more modern one? Thanks,
Rob C.

I can't offer an answer. But, I was in the same situation with an Onkyo pro-logic receiver. I upgraded to a 7.1. Well worth the money. Now I am up-to-date. And it functions as it should with other up-to-date equipment. I kept the Onkyo for tunes in the shop. :D
