Help connecting sub

I have a home theater system with speaker level outputs. The passive sub included with the system is too weak for my taste. I want to use the speaker level inputs on a powered sub. My question is, how should I hook up the wires from the receiver to the sub? There is a separate speaker level output for the sub (one red and one black connector). How do I hook this up to the right and left speaker level inputs on the sub, or do I connect it just using either the right or left input?

You can simply run that speaker wire connection for the subwoofer to a powered subwoofer, so long as the new, powered subwoofer has "high level" speaker inputs. HSU's subs, for example, have "high level" speaker wire inputs on the back that will work perfectly fine like this. Just connect the subwoofer output on your receiver to the Left In speaker wire binding post on the back of the subwoofer. Adjust the volume on the subwoofer and you're good to go.

There are plenty of subs that have speaker inputs on the back. HSU is just one example. You just have to make sure that you look for those speaker wire binding posts. Don't buy a sub that only has an RCA plug as the only connection option ;)

Thanks for the reply. I just didn't know if I needed to hook up both inputs on the sub.

No prob! You don't need both speaker inputs on the back of the sub to be connected. You can do it with some quad wire if you really want to, but it's not necessary at all :)
