Help connecting my TV, PS3 and Receiver!

TV: Pioneer Elite
Receiver: Denon 1910
Speakers: 5 Paradigm
Media: PS3

I have the PS3 connected to the TV with an HDMI cable. Sound outputs fine from TV. I need to get the sound through to the receiver.

I connected an optical cable from the TV to the receiver. As I have an optical cable running hidden in the walls, this is my ideal setup. I'm not sure if I have to run the optical from the PS3 to the receiver, but that is what I would like to avoid if possible.

My PS3 settings are setup with HDMI and Dolby, DTS and all PCM up to 7.1 checked.

I can't seem to find a setting anywhere on my TV to override and send output to the Optical cable.

I've got a million problems right now and wish my audio/video wasn't one Would really love some help. Thanks for reading.

Do you know the model # of the tv. Maybe we can look up the owners manual.

After you hook up the optical to the Denon, does the tv stop outputting sound and you also aren't getting any from the receiver?

If this tv is like virtually all the others I've seen, if you get the HDMI signal to output via the TV's optical output odds are that it'll only be two channel.

If you want "the full boat" of audio options, you'll have to run the HDMI to the receiver and, from there, to the TV.

Your Denon decodes the HD audio formats. To avail of this feature, you need to hook the PS3 to the receiver via HDMI and then from the receiver to TV. (Even if your PS3 is the older fat kind, this is the preferred connection scheme.)

We'll need to know what TV, but the options you have ticked are almost certianly wrong.

If you MUST go HDMI > TV > Optical > receiver you are going to be relying upon whatever format the TV and understands over HDMI.

7.1 is most certainly out as optical does not support it. Bitstreaming the HD audio formats is also certainly a no no.

The TV may or may not be able to pass Dolby Digital and/or DTS from HDMI to optical, but I wouldn't hold my breath.

Most likely you'll need to select 5.1 PCM, possibly 2.0 PCM. If your TV does not support surround passthrough at all [which as stated above it may not] then your best option with the cables you have is to run optical from the PS3.

Thanks so much for the replies everyone. The TV is the Pioner Elite PRO-940HD.

The forum won't let me post urls, but a google search reveals the page on Pioneers site with a link to the owners manual in PDF.

From the manual:

"When signals are input from the HDMI terminals, no digital or analog signals are output from the DIGITAL OUT terminal."

Looks like this confirms the pass through is not possible and I must go the route PS3 -> Receiver -> TV. Correct?

"For audio, the panel supports the following:
• Linear PCM (STEREO 2ch)
• Sampling frequency: 32 kHz, 44.1 kHz, 48 kHz"

If you want anything more you're going to need another option.

Essentially, yes.. Your best option is going to be PS3 > Receiver > TV.. If you have anything else plugged directly to the tv, now's your chance to move them to your receiver. Might as well grab an universal remote while you're at it :D

Thanks everyone. I'm now going HDMI from PS3 to Receiver to TV and getting a fantastic picture with 5.1 Dolby which sounds exceptional. Now to try and make it look cosmetically appealing since I can't use the wires which were run through the walls already :(

Did you just run a HDMI cable from the receiver to the TV and from the TV to the PS3 and no more cables? I'm guessing the PS3 and the receiver are no located side-by-side as well? There is also not a cat-5 cable or similar run between them which is available?

No such thing as to many cables in place, but there may be some other options.
