Hey guys, I'm brand new here. I read over the rules but I'm an idiot so it's possible i missed something and I'm posting this in the wrong section. So if I am, please forgive me.

Anyway, I just got a new house and I'm looking to set up a home theater from scratch. I'm brand new to this so I have no idea what I'm doing so I'll try and provide as much helpful info as I can.

My room is 14.5ft x 18ft. It's in the basement so I'm thinking a projector but I'm not sure the pros and cons vs a large TV.

I want a large screen which will be displayed on the 18ft wall aka the front to back of the room will be 14.5ft. I put together a preliminary list via some googling and stuff. I don't currently have a budget in mind but I'm open to starting simpler and upgrading later. A lot of items on the list are KEF but I have no brand loyalty I just built something to start with so I came as prepared as I could.

This'll be used for movies and maybe the occasional video game

Can anyone offer my tips/advice/build out suggestions for a complete theater?

If you are in a situation where you will have good light control, go with a projector, especially since you are after a large picture. TVs are more convenient, and you can get 4K TVs for a reasonable price unlike projectors, but if you are aiming for an 80" screen or larger, projector.

For the projector, since you want to play video games, you will want to make sure it has a low latency picture.

After you have decided on projector, decide on what kind of surround sound system you want. Will you be happy with 5.1 or do you want a big Atmos system with multiple subwoofers? My advice here is don't compromise on the quality of the front stage speakers or subwoofers for a whole gob of surround channels speakers. Also, try to get two decent subs. Of course a lot of this depends on your budget.

For a projector, do not skimp on the projector mount- get a good one. Also, do not overpay for speaker cables, HDMI cables, or subwoofer cables. You can get perfectly fine cables at Home Depot, so do not spend big on Monster brand cables or something like that. If you want to order your cables, use bluejeans cables.

Lastly, Audioholics has TONS of great resources to get you going. I doubt there is a better site on the internet for this, from beginner to advanced users. Here is a simple article for thinking about the basics. But there are whole libraries of these kinds of articles here, like this, this, this, and this. Good luck!

Wow man, thanks for the great reply. I've got a couple of free consultations scheduled with some local places but I'm just starting my research. My main concern is I don't want to buy crap. I don't know good brands vs bad ones, decent price ranges for each component etc. I'll start with your links

Be careful of installer brand speakers and cables, some are fine but charge waaay too much for what they are providing you.

What is your budget for the whole project?

I can't add much to the excellent advice shadyj has already provided but I would suggest doing your own homework [you can do it right here] before getting too far along or committing to consultations. Believe me, you probably have more aggregate knowledge here than your local community can offer and it comes with no pressure to buy a particular brand, etc.

If you're like a lot of us then you'll be tweaking your HT for many years to come, so don't feel like you have to do it all at once. Your budget will be your best guide seeing that you already appear to have an optimal room.

Welcome to a great site and a great hobby.
