Help choosing a television.

My parents 52in Mitsu DLP recently bit the bullet and they told them that it would cost something like $600 to fix with parts and labor. So they just decided to buy a new TV for their basement.

Any suggestions for them? They aren't really averse to buying any type of TV. They just bought a 42in G15 Panny for upstairs on sale for $999, pretty good deal I thought. They are looking for a TV for their basement.

There is very little ambient light in their basement, just two small windows that would be behind the TV to the right, which can be easily covered when viewing. My mom was looking at these plasmas: LG 60ps60 ($1170, save $130), Panny TCP58S1 ($1,788, save $500), and Samsung PN58B550. I thought about recommending a Kuro, but I think they're only looking to spend around $1700.

Only thing I'm worried about is my 10 yr old brother, who doesn't tend to understand that you can't just leave things on and walk away, will leave the TV on and the plasma will burn in. I know this isn't nearly as big of a problem with newer plasmas though.

Any opinions on plasma vs. lcd (vs. DLP)?

I think she said that she might have found a Samsung 72" DLP that was on clearance for like $1800, but I don't remember the model number. So that might be an option too.

Thanks for the help guys, I'll check back later on this.

Go Plasma

Plasma is awesome and they really don't have a burn-in problem anymore. If they like Panasonic, then that is a excellent plasma.

Pioneer has discontinued making their plasmas, but if you can find one they are the best. I have their PRO-151FD.

LG plasmas also are very good.

Panasonic plasmas are great, choose a plasma TV manufacturer that is creating the most realistic viewing experience with the best picture quality.

they bought a Samsung

Just a follow up, my parents bought a their TV tonight. They decided on a 50" Samsung that's 720p. My dad thought the picture looked better than the similarly priced panny, so since they're going to be watching it and not me they got that one. And in reality the only person who uses it is my brother to play 360 so it's not like the 720 vs 1080 really matters to them, lol.

anyway thanks for all the help guys!

You might want to stay away from DLP. I have a 61" Samsung DLP and the color wheel motor went out after 4 years for $300 so the reliability is not up there like the old CRTs. Also there is bulb replacement to worry about ($110). Mine has lasted 4 years now. My repairman said Mitsubishi's are more expensive to repair.
