Hello,

I'm David, I live in the UK, and I've been a keen reader of this site for a few months now. Reviews seem very thorough, compared to many on the net. I don't know too much about audio, but I do have a pair of Grado SR60's and a CMOY amp, which I enjoy a lot. I'm also fantasising about investing in a serious home cinema at some point, to upgrade my Panasonic HTIB. I am discovering that anticipation is 9/10ths the pleasure!

To kick off my first post, I just bought a pair of HD600's from ebay. Thing is, I'm not sure I like them. I know, I know - it sounds weird. I love my Grados' sound, but it occurs to me that, perhaps, the Senns sound, somehow, "too good". Perhaps I have overreached myself - too much, too soon? I've not long had the Grados. It could also be that my dinky CMOY amp just isn't driving them properly, so I may pop into a local hi-fi store and see if they have something more powerful I can try out.

Anyone have any thoughts? Am I really only getting half the picture without a high-end amplifier?

Thanks

David

I wouldn't say half the picture, but you're definitely missing out. In my opinion, great speakers with a bad amp will sound pretty good. Horrible speakers with a great amp will also sound pretty good. But obviously, good speakers and a good amp will sound amazing. I own a pair of Audio Pro Stage 4 monitors and a Spectro Acoustics 500SR amplifier. I also own a pair of KLH 9915's and a Sherwood receiver from the late 80's/early 90's. So I have both good and bad (though I love my "bad" stuff quite a bit!).

Sennheiser HD600's

Hi tubes,

You know what, I've been listening to the Senns a bit more, and I think they're starting to catch me. I cut a load of CD's onto iTunes today, and even listening from my PC, with my CMOY amp, the sound was damn good. Yeah, I'm sure a Hornet would be a great buy, and maybe something for the future, but my CMOY was built by a smart guy from California, and it's nicely put together, so I think I'll stick with it for the time being.

Know what you mean about liking your "bad" stuff. I have a pair of Wharfedale 505.2's that I bought when I was 16 (long time ago). They were well received at the time, and although their technology will have been surpassed by now, I still think they're a great listen.
