Hello, and a question..

Greetings to all you audioholics,

I'm looking for a $200-$300 sub that will go with my klipsch synergy quintet III speakers and onkyo tx-ds595 (5.1, 75 watt/channel) receiver. My room is about 1800 cubic feet and I mainly listen to music, although I want this system to work for movies as well -- after I (eventually) stretch the funds for a flatscreen.

I'm looking at a four-year old Hsu VTF-2 for $275 and also some discontinued klipsch subs. Price range is pretty set but used is fine. Any suggestions? How many more years will that Hsu last on average?

Thanks!

anyone?

I talked to Hsu Research and they said that they warranty the speaker for 7 years and the electronics for 2, so I'm assuming that's an average life expectancy (at least). I probably won't be able to get the original invoice so the warranty wouldn't cover me anyway, but it's good to get an estimate.

The warranty period has nothing to do with a subs average life expectancy. Does Toyota only expect their cars to last 3 years or 36,000 miles?

If you can stretch another $50, the HSU STF-2 is probably best sub in this price range. The STF-1 is also an awesome sub and it's selling for $254+shipping right now. I have one in a smaller room and it has no problem with music or movies.

Ok... so substitute "minimum" for "average." Thanks for the help.

Entry level sub

For $200, the AV123 X-sub is a good entry level model for clean musical bass down to the 30 Hz range. It should be a good upgrade to your satellite speakers, but don't expect tons of bass in a large room.

Forgot about the x-sub. The STF-1 and the x-sub are the best subs IMO in the $200-$300. Some people also like the Bic H100.
