Hello all! Need advice on new sound system Equipment.

Hello all! I'm happy to be a part of your forum, i have been reading for a while and you all seem like such helpful, passionate and kind people! I'm sure I will feel at home here! I registered because I have had a question I have been wanting to ask, but have never gotten up the courage to do so. Here I goes.

I currently have a Setup which includes my PC with Two speakers which came from an old TEAC 3 way home theater speaker system, I love these speakers, they look mean and sound great in most cases. How ever they are currently powered by a 25 year old Hitachi Receiver! The Receiver does have a special place in my heart, but it has slowly been dieing over the past few months.
So I guess what I'm saying is that I need a Suggestion for a new Receiver! I only have about $400-$500(AUD) to spend on this. Suggestions.
Also with the receiver I want to be able to purchase a sub woofer to increase my audio enjoyment . I have never been in the market for one before, and any suggestions for one would be awesome.

First, welcome aboard. Second, I'm pretty sure I won't be able to help you much. This isn't due to having a dearth of opinions, but because I have no idea what is available to you in the land Down Under. Also, I'm pretty fuzzy on the conversion for currency, but I *think* you're talking about $350 to $400 US, no? Here that'll get you a nice Denon 1707 AV receiver or its Yamaha equivalent...but I don't know if you get those there, or if they are similarly priced.
