Hello people hope your day is going well. Anyways, I recently purchased an hdtv capable tv from Sears that came with a free hd upconvert dvd player made by JSI. It seems to work ok BUT have noticed it sure gets very very hot. Have never owned a dvd player that got that hot. Anybody here have had the same problem or have any ideas what could be causing it to get so hot. Please feel free to share your thoughts. Have a great afternoon.

That might explain why they are free...
Yeah what I was thinking BUT it does have a good picture with respect to the upconversion. However, the excessive heat thing bothers me. Have any idea why it does that?

I wouldnt worry about it. I think most progressive scan players generate some heat. In fact, the new Toshiba HD-DVD player even has a cooling fan!!!

Hey Buckeye_Nut, does that HD DVD player has an Ethernet port on it?? If so, what can you do with it?

It's likely that the maker spent very little money on insuring that the player would continue to work for long periods of time. It runs hot and lasts only long enough to avoid warranty claims. Next year when you need a new one, you won't buy a JSI, but they've got plenty of other brand names so you might wind up with another one from the same company anyway. :)

So enjoy it while it lasts and be glad it was free. :)

Well decided to take it back and exchange it so will know soon if it gets too hot. Actually, I tried to convince Sears to let me exchange it for another brand BUT to no avail. The manage on duty seemed to have something up her *ss if you know what I mean. Oh well no biggee--but if this one runs hot I WILL go raise some he** and something will be done or I will go above the manager's head. Hopefully, it will work correctly and everything will be alright.

You've probably never owned an upconverting p-scan player before:cool:

Of course, HOT is a relative word. You should expect the player to generate heat.

Just give it room to breathe, and you'll be fine. Considering that it's a freebie, I expecially wouldnt worry. Hasseling the managers over a 'freebie' wont get you very far. Just dont jam it into a tight space where it has no room for air circulation.

Ummmm actually I have owned an upconversion to near high def dvd player made by Samsung. It was the 840 model with dvi instead of hdmi. I absolutely loved it and at no time did it ever het extremely hot. Sure it got a little warm at times especially if I watched several movies or playing some cd's. The JSI was/is being properly ventilated and trust me it got extremely hot. To give you an idea of how hot lets just say I could feel the heat 12" from the front of the player and the closer I got the hotter it became. My point about the manager was she was very rude and obnoxious and for no reason whatsoever. She could at the very least been more friendly and apologetic. I have been a store manager before and one thing I learned is that you have to treat people right even when store policy does not allow you to help them. The salesman already had told me he did not think the manager would do it-so I was not upset at all. No biggee as I will know soon if it too gets too hot. Be sure to let you all know. Have a great day. Thanks for your comments. After all, this is how we audiophiles/videophiles learn via the dynamics of the conversation at hand.

LOL

So why are you fretting over a cheapo freebie? You're making a big ordeal over a player that probably isnt worth $100. If it gets too hot for your liking, toss it in the garbage and use your Samsung instead. The Samsung is probably a better player anyway.

My 2 cents

LOL.......good point. But there is one problemo---I sold the Samsung when I sold my tv. I wanted to get away from dvi and had the opportunity to do so. Not really making a big deal just thought Sears would had at least offered an in store discount/credit or something. Chances are, I will probably go buy another Samsung dvd player with hdmi and be done with it. Please dont take me the wrong way. The manager "on-duty" was way out of line though especailly since I have spent a lot of money over there throughout the last several years. Guess she had a bad day and unfortunately she took it out on me. I can live with it if she can. As I said before no "biggee" LOL.

I've had a Denon 2900 player for a couple of years and it runs pretty hot too.....and that was a $1K machine. You can actually feel the warmth on the disk when you take it out, yet it's been trouble free. I've got it in a cabinet with a few inches of space around the top and sides and it doesn't seem to have any ill effects.

Mort (who will probably go home tonight and find his player smoldering after making this comment)

The discs coming out of my Denon 2200 are pretty hot as well. I have never really noticed the player itself getting hot. I wouldn't worry about it if it were me. Use it until it dies and throw it out.

Well watched a new release today and it did not seem to get real hot. So all is well at least so far.
