HDTV Upconverting Woes

I have a Mitsubishi WS-55813 55" Diamond RPTV that will receive a 1080i HDTV signal, but upconverts a 720p signal. Unfortunately, the upconverstion only works with DVI connections, and with component connections I'm out of luck. This is a problem becasue my comcast motorola cable box only goes out to component, and my x-box uses the same connections.

Therefore, unless the signal is broadcast in 1080i, I'm out of luck, becasue the Mitsubishi won't scale 720p up to 1080i. Obviously with the x-box, I'm limited to 480p.

I'm a bit worried about the x-box 360 (which I'd like to buy - but can't find anyway) and the scaling issue. Microsoft totally dropped the ball by not including a DVI out. Does anyone have any idea how the scaling issues will effect my monitor, assuming that I am going to have to use a composite connection? I've heard that the 360 upscales to the TV's best resolution - which would be 1080i - but has anyone seen how well this actually works?

What if a game is encoded in 720p?

And does anyone have a solution for the comcast box issue?

Thanks in advance.

1. You have the ability within your cable box to set it so that it forces all outputs to a single format. So, if you set this to 1080i output, then you are perfectly fine with all broadcasts displaying on your display.

2. The 360 has this same feature in that you can tell it to force all outputs to only 1080i resolution.

This will work well for you and solve your issues.

To build on what BMX just said, if your Motorola box is anything like mine, and I'm pretty sure they must be similar models since motorola doesnt have alot of hd models, turn off the box but leave your tv on, then press the menu button on the box itself. this should pull up a menu, and change the component output (probably called YrPbBr or whatever) to 1080i. U can also do a 480i override to 1080i, which is nice because I havent noticed a change in PQ, but it saves that 3 second transition time when flipping between HD and regular channels.

Just a heads up on the Xbox 360... If you pick one up, make sure you switch the Component selector on, on the cable itself. I spent 10 minutes trying to figure out what was wrong until i read (and finally understood) the directions on the xbox.

As another suggestion, if you are in the market for a new receiver, the yamaha RX-V2600 would solve all of your problems, along with most other companies flagship receivers as well.

Motorola Cable Box

Motorola has electronic versions of the user guides on their website. I've got a DCT6200 and you can set the output to 1080i, 720p, etc.
