HDTV Ready Receiver?

I have a Yamaha HTR 5830 A/V receiver. Yamaha tells me that it's HDTV ready. Well, without an HDMI or DVI input on the receiver, how is this possible?

I looked through the 5830 manual and didn't see anything related to HD at all. It's quite possibly because the receiver does pass-through on it's component inputs. Maybe the receiver is capable of passing HD signals (720p/1080i) to its component outputs IF those signals were input on it's component inputs. The receiver definately does not do any up-scaling or up-conversion.

The component connection FR is 5MHz - 60MHz which is enough for current HDTV.

I don't think you can get an HDMI switch for <$200 let alone a receiver with HDMI. Your receiver is at the bottom of the Yamaha lineup. If you are willing to spend a couple grand on a new HDTV, then you should consider a receiver and speaker upgrade.

I think I'll just get an HDTV ready television and get the HD box from my cable co. It's only $5 a month.

If you do this, be aware that you won't be able to get over-the-air HD broadcosts since the TV won't have a built-in HD decoder. Depending on the area, you may be able to receive some great HD channels over-the-air for free. I live in Houston and there are several that are available if you have an antenna and a TV that can decode them.

Yea I thought about that, but my house is wired for cable, no external OTA antenna. I live in the Chicago area and believe it or not, there are only about 5 OTA channels that broadcast in HD. Coming thru the cable I have much more to choose from plus those 5.

Fair enough. I'm surprised Chicago doesn't have more OTA HD stations. Indianapolis, just a few hours away, comes close to leading the country in the amount of OTA channels. Amazing.
