HDTV or HD Ready?

I have a Yamaha HTR 5830 receiver. I know that you can connect an HD ready TV to it. Which is more cost efficient? An HDTV or HD ready? Also, I need a TV with Optical audio out since my receiver has an Optical in for TV. Any suggestions?

'HDTV Ready' means that the TV can display high-def resolutions but does not contain a built-in HD tuner. If you get the HD via a cable box or satellite dish the TV can display it.

TVs labeled 'HDTV' instead of just 'ready' contain a built-in tuner and are able to receive 'over the air' HD signals via an antenna. [Some stations broadcast free HD over the air].

You only need a digital output on the TV if you are using the built-in tuner of the TV. If you are using a cable box or satellite dish, you would connect the audio directly to the receiver.

I wouldn't get that tv, I would get a tv that is in widescreen format.

Much better option. Remember that 4:3 stuff will be more like 25" than 30" on a widescreen TV, so you need a larger screen than you're used to.

BB also carries Samsung and Toshiba models for similar prices.

You can get a pretty sweet deal on some of those philips tele's on their outlet website. They are refurbished units, but I think they come with the full warranty. I can't remember the model # of the philips jonythan posted but I think it's the same tv, it's almost $300 cheaper there, with free shipping. I'll look around and see if I can find a 10% off coupon, as well.
