HDTV Monitor question

I thought I saw the answer to this earlier, but darned if I can find it again...

I am thinking of buying an HDTV monitor (no built in tuner). I just intend on using basic cable to begin with (I know it won't receive HDTV signals). The question is "Can I run the basic cable, with no set top box, into the monitor, or would that still require a tuner?" Or is the tuner only needed if I want digital and HDTV?

I will probably get a HD cable box from the cable company later, but $ is a bit tight now.

thanks-

You can run regular, analog cable into the TV without a set top box. Your TV already has an NTSC tuner built in.

To receive digital or HD, you'll need an external set top tuner.

Is it a TV w/NTSC tuner & no ATSC tuner or just an HD monitor. A monitor is a display device and nothing more. Monitors do not have any type of tuner, otherwise it becomes a TV. Without the tuner, the monitor cannot differentiate between the channels.

Good post. That is what I was going to mention.

If his is HD ready, then it would have regular tuner for the regular cable.
