Hello All - a few questions I hope you can help me out with.

I’ve just purchased a Sony KVHX32M31 HDTV and a Hotchip ODT-4000HD High Def TV set top receiver.
Hotchip Details
HD Digital (free to air) TV is transmitted at 1920x1080interlaced and 1280x720progressive here in Australia.

I’m looking for the best possible connection option for my picture.

For HD input the TV has Component plus two extra plugs marked HD/VD that I understand are for Horizontal and Vertical Hold information.

The SetTop Box has Component (no HD/VD), DVI and RGBHV connections.

At the moment I have the unit connected to the TV just via component. Is there a way that I can use the RGBHV or DVI outputs?

Or....... The difference in picture quality in going to be negligible and I should just stay with component?

And
I’ve a Yamaha RX-V1500 receiver. If I use the receiver to control the switching of the HD SetTop box, can the RX-V1500 handle switching and outputting the above resolutions or is it going to bring the quality back?
With the TV having the ability to handle progressive output, am I also better off plugging my Toshiba SD-1250 DVD player also directly into the TV via component or leave it switched through the receiver?

Appreciate your help.

Thanks, Aaron

This sounds like a question for BMXTRIX but I'll give it a shot. If your TV and STB both have RGBHV connections and DVI connections AND you have the cables you should try all three to see if you can notice a difference in picture quality. I don't think it will be a big difference but its worth checking out.

As for switching the video through your receiver you should not notice any loss of picture quality. I have a DirecTV HD TiVo, DVD, and PS2 all switched through my Denon 3805 and the picture looks the same as with direct connections to the TV. The convience of switching video through your receiver is a nice option, especially if you have other people using your system.

I don't think you will notice the difference between the component video connectors vs the DVI. If you already have the cables fine but if not, I wouldn't go out and buy them since it isn't a cheap cable.

As far as switching through the receiver, that Yamaha can do it so I say go for it.

Ha - no need to double post - I think you posted the same question in the receivers area... to which I provided a somewhat detailed answer which amounts to:

Yes, no problem, do it.
