HDTV connection help

I have a Yamaha RX-V757 Receiver, Samsung 56" DLP (1080i), Motorola HD cable box and surround sound. I want to use HDMI from cable to TV, since I can't connect this way through the receiver. What is the best way to then connect audio? I'm currently using component in and optical to the receiver from cable box and back out to TV. Sometimes the audio and video are not in sync. I want to use HDMI to get the best picture quality. Any suggestions?

You've got your connection ideas correct. The audio sync problem is something you can adjust for in the receiver. See pg. 68 of the manual for audio delay.

Thanks. Once I connect the HDMI from cable box to TV, do I leave the component from cable box to receiver and receiver to TV connected?

You'll want to keep the receiver to TV connection for other sources like DVD.
