Do you guys suggest hiring someone to calibrate an HDTV for best picture quality? If so, how much do these guys cost? Will the Avia DVD give simular results? Thanks for any help.

What kind of TV are we talking here?
Well, a disc like Avia will let you do some basic calibrations. But, for the ultimate an ISF calibration is a must. He has the training for all parameters as it can be extensive.

Well, its going to be bought very soon, I just wanted to know what I need to get the best picture. We're leaning toward either a Samsung 56 inch DLP or a Sony 55 inch LCD (both rear projection).

You can find an ISF trained tech in your area at this site http://www.imagingscience.com/isf-trained.cfm

I haven't done it yet, but from what I understand the prices vary depending on what you want done. In my area the price ranges from about $300 to $450.

Good luck!

I too have considered using an ISF tech to calibrate my 55" Sony LCD RPTV. I tried calibrating the TV using the video essentials disc and found some improvement especially from the dvd player. The HDTV signal is terrific, but like all LCD RPTV, SDTV has the screen door affect. I'm not sure if the tech can eliminate this affect or will there will be a big difference in overall picture quality to justify spending $300 - $400.

By the way, will the TV need to be re-calibrated over time?

Thanks, Ron

I've heard a lot of talk about hiring a profesional to calibrate your RPTV's and plasma's, but I haven't heard anyone mention doing the same for a CRT SDTV. I have a 32" JVC, which has a pretty decent picture IMHO, for a SDTV and am wondering if it would be worth my while and money.

Yes, I definitely suggest having an ISF Technician calibrate your display. I have a Sony 50WE655 LCDRP with the additional of a neutral density filter calibrated by an ISF Tech. If your sony model does not have a dynamic iris I strongly suggest looking into having a ND filter installed, it improved my black level significantly. Quite simply this set can achieve much better results having an ISF tech tweak the set through its service menu.

For example after ISF calibration my contrast ratio had doubled from my original settings using DVE, which I am very familiar with. My black level is now equal if not better than any DLP on the market after the ND filter installation, granted its contrast ratio cant achieve DLP levels. The Sonys color decorder is excellent and my color and hue are spot on sick.

VERY IMPORTANT: If you settle on an ISF calibration do thorough research before hiring a technician make sure he/she has extensive knowledge regarding your display do not bring in the first person you speak with ask around. If you need a recommendation PM me and I will see if I can offer some info.

Yeah I was wondering about your offer to help and provide some info. I have a tech that is interested in cal'n my Sony, and at a discounted price. He claims to have much expensive equipment and certification thru ISF. He was also referred by a local dealer with a good reputation. I am comfortable with him but wish your advise.
