It's complicated.

Brief History:
I have a PC that has HDMI out. The HDMI comes from the North Bridge of the PC. This HDMI output sends out both Audio and Video, of course. On my HDMI display I can hear the audio of my DVD but only via the two speakers on the display - a Samsung HDMI 1080p DLP HD TV

I want to be able to hear the AUDIO in dolby digital 5.1. The problem is; it appears that to hear dolby digital 5.1 audio I have to have a seperate output for audio from the PC besides the HDMI, I do not have a seperate output on this PC.

Question:
In this case how can I hear Dolby digital 5.1 without having to have a seperate audio output from the PC, is there an HDMI receiver that will take the HDMI signal and pass through the 1080p to the video display while at the same time decoding the dolby digital 5.1 and playing it back, all from the one HDMI output from the PC?

thanks

Break out your wallet my friend

There are 1080P HDMI broadcasting receivers, but get ready to pay for it. As 1080P is the upper crust of video and HDMI switching receivers are also for the most part higher end receivers (those that can do 1080P anyway). You would have to run the HDMI from your PC to the receiver then HDMI from the receiver to the display.

Here is a short subject from this web page concerning one from Pioneer.

The other thing you could do is buy a HDMI 1080P switch, cheaper than a whole receiver for sure.

Audio options

You might have a couple inexpensive options for getting the Dolby or DTS signal to your receiver via a digital optical or coax cable. First, check the sound card on your PC for a digital audio output. This is the same signal that is sent over the HDMI cable. If you don't have one, you can pick up a sound card with this output for about $20 from newegg or other sites. While you are there, but the cable you need.

A second option is to check the back of your HDTV. It might have an audio passthrough output that you can connect to the receiver with a digital optical or coax cable.

A $1k+ receiver and extra HDMI cable will work, too, but I would try the $20 solution first.

If you want an HDMI solution, you'll need to either have a reciever with HDMI inputs and outputs, or if your TV has a digital audio out, run that to your receiver.

I recently asked a similar question on the general board so sorry for the double question. I am having the same problem the original poster had. My reciever has 2 HDMI ins and 1 HDMI out. When I send an audio signal throught the HDMI box via sat box or a DVD player the audio skips the reciever and goes straight to the TV speakers?? I can only get audio to the reciever if i connect an aditional optic cable. I only want to use the HDMI, is this possible??

One thing to check is to make sure that their isn't a setting in the receiver for just a pass through. On the Yamaha RXV-2600 their are quite a few settings that deal with just the HDMI inputs. You could always call the store that you bought it from and they should be able to help you out over the phone.
