Thanks for all of the info you guys have supplied so far in helping me get my system started. 2 questions:

1) The weak link in my system will be the tv since it is only 1080i. If I run HDMI from my PS3 to the receiver (I'm leaning towards the Yamaha RXV665), can I still run component cables to the tv? Basically, if I go HDMI into the receiver, do I have to go HDMI out?

2) As far as an audio signal from the PS3 to the receiver, which is better, HDMI or the digital/optical out?

I've never had anything above component so this is all new to me.

Thanks guys!

No, you cannot "downconvert" from HDMI to component. I am pretty certain the recevier won't do this for you.

Since the 665 has HDMI, you should use HDMI for your sound for the PS3 as it will give you better sound for certain games and definitely for Blu-ray movies.

No, you cannot "downconvert" from HDMI to component. [STRIKE]I am pretty certain the[/STRIKE] Receiver won't do this for you due to HDMI used DRM enforced HDCP secure path = Means Strictly Digital and enforced to be heavily encrypted.
.
Fixed :D
No need for thanks

Why would you want to run component to the TV? Just go all HDMI and call it good.

So now it looks like this theater will be useless until I upgrade my TV. I guess I need some good pointers here. Looking for around 52" for about $1000.00.

I think I smell what your stepping in. Run the component video direct to the tv and then run an audio cable from the PS3 to the A/V Receiver to get the surround sound? as far as the audio from the PS3 to the receiver, would you use hdmi or the digital optical?

My bad...disregard the last post. So you're saying run the component from the PS3 to the receiver and then component from the receiver to the tv. Then, run the optical/digital from the PS3 to the receiver for my surround sound.
Thanks again!!

Or you could run component and optical audio to avr and hdmi to tv :)
It's doesn't work other way around as it was noted before.

Yeah but for now I am going to stick with my 1080i tv which has NO HDMI input. That will be a glorious day....when the 1080p flatscreen hits the wall. By the way, what's your take on that Sharp TV? There are a couple on Craigslist out here in Phoenix for about $950.

Sorry, forgot your tv doesn't have hdmi...
About Sharp LCD:
I personally like them a lot! But I had several members jump on me, on borderline being offencive and comparing Sharp TV to Bose :mad::(
Their rec is Panasonic plasmas G10 or G15 P series....

Hey "Bored" last thing. My HD cable box and my PS3 both have composite out and optical/digital audio out, but that Yamaha only has 1 input that has composite and optical in. Is it possible to hook up both with the composite and optical audio?

I've never used coaxial digital ever in my life. Could that be used out of the cable box along with the composite video? What's the difference between optical or coaxial audio?

by the looks of this pic, your yammi have TWO component video inputs.
One with Optical audio in and other with coax.
There is no difference between them, except physical media - the data traveled on both interconnects is the same.
Any single RCA cable should do, but it's recommended to use 75 ohm coax cable, monoprice got them plenty for single digit dollars..
You can connect ps3 component&optical and cable box component&coax.
You'll not notice any differences.

p.s: People typically call me BSA :D

HDCP regs forbid down conversion of HDMI to an analog output.
