OK I have a Pioneer VSX-1016TX reciever. I am having troubles with my HDMI setup. I want my sat box, and my dvd player connected to the reciever via hdmi. Than I want a single HDMI cable running to my tv. My trouble comes with the audio, the reciever accepts the vid signal and sends it on to the tv ok, but it will not do sound. The manual states that I need a seperate audio cable such as fiber optic or coax? If this is the case, than why the hell am I using HDMI. Could I get the same performance from a Component and a fiber optic (minus 1080P)? I have the exact same troubles with my Sony STR-DG995.
I guess I am asking someone to fill me in on what I am lacking in the HDMI sense, whether knowledge, equipment or both.
thanks guys/gals,
-Chris

Ask the cable company and see if their hdmi connection is also set for audio. I bet not.
HDMI would be ideal to send the digital video signal, less processing in the chain. And, since you already have it, by not just add that digital audio cable and be done with it.

You're not lacking anything in the HDMI sense. From what I understand upon reading up on the Pioneer VSX-1016TX, is that it only does video with HDMI, and that the manual correctly states that you also need a seperate audio cable. Obviously this defeats the intended purpose of having one cable do both. There are more expensive A/V receivers that pass both audio and video. But they are what they are: more expensive.

Your Pio 1016 has HDMI version 1.0, which only carry video signals.
Versions 1.1 onwards do carry both, audio & video signals though.

Hey guys, thanks a bunch, I sure appreciate the help. I was so excited to delve into the HDMI world but looks like I'll have to wait. Darn, I'll just have to go out and buy another receiver..he he.
Thanks again
