HDMI to TV - Optical to Receiver issue

I just purchased a new Hi-def TV and DVD player. I connect the HDMI to my TV, then Optical to my receiver. Sound comes through off the DVD player but not in Dolby Digital. Dolby digital comes in from off-air channels and pushed through the optical to the receiver without problems. I've gone through all my settings and everything is setup correctly. Will this setup work or is there something about HDMI I don't know? I thought the HDMI carries the audio and video to the TV, then the TV could output the Audio through the optical connection.
Do I just need to connect a digital coax from the DVD directly to the receiver? If so, then that would defeat the purpose of HDMI.
Thanks for any light someone could shed on this!

I am not sure if this helps, but my BrightHouse HD cable box also has a problem with HDMI and audio also. If I connect the cable box to my receiver (RXV2600) I only get 2 channel audio, even if i hook up the digital optical and tell the receiver to use the optical instead of the HDMI audio. It is a known problem with the cable box. The only way to get 5.1 DD is to use the optical and component video (the cable box requires a restart to re-enable DD through the optical after HDMI has been disconnected). It seems that some devices have problems fully supporting the HDMI spec. Hopefully a firmware update will fix this soon, but BrightHouse will not give me a time frame on this.

Thanks for the input!

Does anybody have a working setup like this with any DVD player and TV?

Not sure I follow you here. Are you hoping that the TV will return the digital audio sent to the TV from the cable box via the HDMI cable? Not that I know about.
You need to pass the digital audio from the cable TV box to the receiver, have it process it. What the TV might do if it gets digital audio is send stereo sound to the receiver through the audio out on the TV.

Go to monophone.com and pay $4 for a digital audion cable and run it directly from your DVD player to your A/V receiver. The TV just serves as a middleman in this capacity anyway. With your HDMI connection you can still listen to the audio through the TV speaker on those occassions where you may not want to power up the A/V unit.
