HDMI Receivers to DVI

I have a Sony 50" LCD with only DVI input (only one). As this was an inherited gift I am certainly not complaining but my concern now lies with a new receiver which I may be purchasing (Yamaha RX-V661) which has HDMI inputs. I am aware there is a HDMI to DVI cable available however am I somewhat screwed because of the lack of inputs on my tv? I am primarily concerned with movie/DVD performance. How many components does one typically run through HDMI inputs on the receiver? Please advise. :(

Theres no need to be concered. HDMI passes audio and visual while DVI only passes visual. So if you run HDMI into your receiver you will still be getting the sound quality from your movies and dvds. Than just run a HDMI to DVI cable to your TV. So for cables you'll be getting the best audio and visual you can.

The one thing you won't be able to do however is watch TV without having the receiver if you run only HDMI to the receiver.

Is there a situation whereby I would require more than one HDMI-DVI cable running into my tv (thus requiring another DVI input on the TV)?

Yes if you had two components that have HMDI or DVI outputs that you wanted to watch on your tv than yes you'd need more inputs on your tv but if you buy a receiver that you can run you're HDMI into than just run one cable to your tv than you'll be fine. Just remember you need a receiver that will accept all the HMDI components you own or want to own.
