HDMI Receiver Hookup Question

I need to understand how best to hookup my cablebox/tv/receiver via HDMI.

I am currently only operating in 2 channel audio (Paradigm Studio 20's) and want the audio to come from those at all times during TV viewing. I want the TV's audio bypassed or OFF.

Also, I would like the cablebox AND TV to turn on when I turn on the receiver and turn off when I turn off the receiver.

From what I've read it's an HDMI cable from the receiver (IN) to the cablebox (OUT) and another HDMI cable from receiver (OUT) to TV (IN).

Is this correct?

I will eventually work my way up to 5.1 and then 7.1, but this is the set up (TV/receiver/DVD/two channel) I have for now. I will use component video and RCA audio cables for the DVD player.

Unless your receiver has a way to turn off the audio output over HDMI, I haven't seen a way to do this.

Ok, but can you help me with the set up? I'm ok having to use more than one remote to turn on and off the system. Most important is where the HDMI cables go and how it is all set up.

What you said in the first post is correct. One from the cable box out to receiver in and one from receiver out to TV in.

To get everything to turn on and off together, you would need to get a programmable remote that can handle macros (that you would have to program yourself) or something like a Logitech Harmony which sort of does the macro part for you. With the Harmonys you create a task such as "watch movie" and it will turn on the appropriate devices to start up and then turn them all off at once as well.

That's great! I planned on doing a Harmony remote once I have ALL the components I want.

Thanks for the help!

Just turn the audio setting on your tv to off & run the hdmi to your a/v reciever. If your tv has this option turn the HDMI control to on. They both should turn on at once. if not use a learning remote most have the function to turn certain components on while performing different tasks. IE watch tv/listen cd, ect. I have a new Mx-500 learning remote I could sell you & it is easy to set-up for those multi step on & off settings for multi components. If your interested my e-mail is kodg@verizon.net.
