I couldn't find anything that answered this specifically, so sorry if this is a rehash. I'm confused about the various versions of HDMI 1.0, 1.1, 1.2, etc. Do these refer specifically to the cables themselves or are there receivers, TV's, DVD players, etc that only support the various versions? In other words, I'm wondering if I were to buy a LCD TV with HDMI inputs, are the inputs on this TV only capable of supporting a certain version of HDMI...say version 1.2 (and backwards capability of course). Or is a TV like this which is HDMI capable able to support any version of HDMI being fed into it and the upgrade would be in the capability of the HDMI cable itself (say HDMI 1.3 cable)? Does this make sense? Thanks for any help.

The version numbers refer to the version of the HDMI specification where the requirements are defined. There is an article on this site somewhere that describes what each successive version adds over the prior version.

Yes, TVs and components support a specific version and the versions are backwards compatible; ie a 1.1 device will support input from a 1.0 device.

Just make sure you get at least version 1.1. The features of the newer versions are not yet widely supported.

yeah unless you're me and the version of HDMI in your TV doesn't support the version of DVI in your cable box even though it's supposed to. Eh whatever, I'm leaving cablevision as soon as fios tv becomes available here. Their boxes are made by motorola and are HDMI so I should have no problem with connecting it to my tv. Too bad i just spend 50 bucks on component cables that I won't need in another month or so.
