hdmi pass thru issue

My system and connected components:

panasonic tcp-50x1 plasma tv (720p)
panasonic dmp-bd85 blu ray player
onkyo tx-nr509 receiver
xbox360 console
directv hr-500 dvr

I bought the onkyo tx-nr509 and everything is connected to receiver through appropriate hdmi connection in's on receiver with the hdmi out going into my hdmi connection in #1 on pansonic tv. Everything works with the exception of one occasional issue.

When watching a movie on my panasonic blu ray player (non 3d) I occasionally get this flashing flickering and snow like screen that will turn blue for a second. The sound and video will also cut out when this happens. It will not happen very often (every half hour) and then will suddenly do this several times (3-4) before stopping. The movie will continue playing but the sound and video will cut out.

The same issue happens occasionally when playing on my xbox. I have not noticed it yet when watching directv.

My old receiver was non hdmi so every component was connected directly to the tv by hdmi cables without passing through a receiver. Never had any issues before and I am using the exact SAME hdmi cables for new set-up.

Do I have a faulty receiver with a bad hdmi pass thru switcher? I did an advanced rma to try the same receiver to compare.

Any suggestions? Thank You.

Have you tried to do a system re-set? First un plug all the equipment and try again before a processor re-set. My Onkyo TX-SR 805 did this too with HDMI switching problems. You will have to run the Audyssey program again after the system re-set. Good luck hope this helps.

By this you mean unplug the hdmi cables from receiver and then re-connect. Unplug receiver first before re-connecting? Thanks.

Doug unplug all the 110 volt power from all your equipment for a minute or two and plug them back in. If this does not work read in the Onkyo manual about doing a system re-set. If this does not help your Onkyo is having problems like my TX-SR 805 did. My 805 had bad problems like this as did many of the 805 owners.

Ok, will give it a try. Will this be something I would have to do often. I'm seeing alot of Onkyo hdmi issues posted in this forum, kinda scaring me. I was so impressed with the sound quality of this unit for being entry level I thought I would give it another chance before going to another brand.

I have an older Denon receiver that I have used for five years with zero problems. Got this Onkyo for the benifit of lossless audio and hmdi pass thru.

I had a 2007 model TX-SR 805 HD AVR($1,100.00) and I had to ship it to the Onkyo Repair Center several times( I had to pay) while it was in warranty for HDMI parts burning up. But it had bigger amps and was prone to run hotter then most AVR. I had such good luck with a 2003 Yamaha RX-V2400 7.1 AVR (no HDMI or HD decoders) or it would still be in HT room. After the 3rd time the 805 burned up parts and it quit(again) I purchased another Yamaha. a RX-V1900 HD 7.1 and it has been a plug and play. I have fans on all my amps etc now just make sure as I am retired now and my equipment is on for 12 hours a day now :) I do have to unplug my Verizon FIOS HD TV box every now and then to re-set it but after 13 months the new Yamaha has worked Great. Onkyo moved the assembly plant from Japan and their quality has suffered from it. I loved my 805 ......when it worked.

I unplugged everything for a few minutes and checked all the hdmi connections to be sure they are seated properly. Once the receiver was powered on though all the same settings were there and saved.

I will test out in the next few days and if the same problem persists I will move some hdmi cables around with the small chance a cable is causing the problem.

I looked in the manual and didn't see anything in the manual for a system reset.

I advance rma'd so I could try to swap out the same model and see if that helps.

I'll admit I'm having second thoughts and may order a different receiver. Two in my price range I could order are the Denon avr-1712 for 280.00 or Yamaha rx-v571 for 315.00. I have a thirty percent off coupon thats good through tomorrow. I only bought the onkyo because I got an incredible cyber Monday deal.

Your thoughts on the other two models? Sounds like you have alot of experience with AVR's and your advice is appreciated.

Look in the owners manual for processor reset in the index or Resetting The System like my Yamaha has. Monday call Onkyo Customer Service and ask if this model has a way to reset the system. Unplugging usually does not erase the Audyssey settings. I would swap out for a Yamaha or Denon if you still have a problem. As you can see I like Yamaha and this time I went to Best Buy and purchased a new last year model they were having a sale on. And I purchased the two year extended service policy on top of the Yamaha warranty. If something goes wrong I drive up the street and drop it off, I don't have to argue with the factory customer service or pay freight several times again. If the unit can't be repaired I have a full store credit to pick out a different AVR and drive home. Onkyo Customer Service was a Bad experience, untrained girls that were reading from a book. I had to ask for a Manager before I got any real advice and finally a RMA for warranty to ship back.
