HDMI laptop with no 5.1 audio

When I connect my Vaio Laptop VPCEB17FX to my Yamaha Receiver RX-V365 all with HDMI cables, there is no sound coming out from the receiver, sound comes only from the Sony Bravia TV speakers.

The instructions manual says that to fix this you have two choices: a) to make a digital or analog connection besides the HDMI, or, b) to mute the volume of the video monitor.

Well now, I cannot choose option "a)" because the only audio output my laptop has is the headphones stereo jack. If i connect through this, i would loose my 5.1 channels.

I tried with option "b)", but muting the TV or bringing its volume down just makes no audio coming from the TV, but still cant hear anything from my receiver.

Does anyone have an idea to solve my issue?? Buying a new receiver or laptop is not an option for myself rigth now

Thanks!

Does your laptop use an ati video card? If it does, you need to load the ati hdmi audio driver and select that as your default audio device to send audio via hdmi to your receiver.

You must make an additional connection for audio with the 365 when HDMI is used. It does not decode audio over the HDMI connection. It only passes it through to the next device in the chain. Your other option is to send the audio to the receiver using the headphone jack and a y-cable splitter to connect into the analog red/white jacks in the back. There are some TVs which will output the audio, unchanged, using an optical connection. This could be fed back to the receiver.

Your best bet is still probably going to be the headphone to receiver connection. You won't be able to use any 5.1 signal with this connection.

1) make sure you have Windows 7
2) set the Playback Device to HDMI Audio for DEFAULT device, instead of SPEAKERS!
