I’m having some issues with HDMI…not sure what the cause is.

I have a Scientific Atlanta Explorer 8300HD cable box hooked up to my Samsung LN-S4051D through a Denon 2809. Everything was going good until I tried to mix HDMI into the mix. When connected everything via HDMI I was suddenly only able to see only the HD channels. None of the SD channels appear now. I personally think the problem is with the cable box, but when I asked the cable company they told me that SD doesn’t pass over HDMI, but I am pretty confident that their answer is BS. Anyway, does anybody have any ideas on how to overcome this?

Thanks,

Chris

It may be an converting issues. Check your receivers upconverting features to see if it's touching the signal.

HDMI is such a mixed-bag, isn't it?

On one hand, you have more convenience with less wires.

On the other hand, you have copy-protection/handshake issues with the displays.

I think everything should come with both HDMI AND Component Video + Coaxial Digital Audio. Then at least we could have the option of using Component 1080p.

HDMI is capable handling 480, 720, & 1080 resolution.

On my "older" Sony HDMI v1.0 DVD player, I can set the resolution to 480p and still get picture when hooked directly to my "older" HDMI v1.0 TV.

In your cablebox setup there should be a setting for SD conversion, sometimes labeled as 4:3 Override. You can set this to OFF and it should correct the problem your having. I have heard this with other brand AVR and MOTO boxes on various cable carriers. (each seem to have various software versions) **yes SD does pass through HDMI connection** Your cable box should be set to Upconvert or HDMI/Auto in the Format setting.

8300HD is the silver box right? There menu settings by pressing the settings button twice on the remote. You can also access Rest/setup menu by pressing the Guideand Info buttons at the same time on the front panel of the STB (while in standby power) This should get you in to adjust settings.

upgrade

I have wanted to upgrade my yamaha to the RX 663 but have not just for that reason! HDMI just has a ton of issues. I enjoy the setup how it is now with OPtical and Component Vid. I am sure once you get the HDMI going it will be worth it but I am going to hold off until a new solution comes along.

If I were to take a wild guess, I would say that the cable box is not upconverting 480i SDTV to 1080i or 720p HDTV, which means that your receiver is likely getting 480i over HDMI, and may not be able to recognize it, or necessarily upconvert it to 1080i/720p.

This would likely mean that 480i is getting passed onto your display. Not sure, but your display may not like 480i over HDMI.

The first thing to do is to connect the HDMI cable directly from the cable box to your TV to ensure that you have the same results. It is a quick and easy test.

If the cable box is set to Upconvert1 or Upconvert 2 it should manually upscale the resolution to 720P or 1080I internally before sending to the display. It could be that the edid information passing from display through components indicates 480i is not possible through HDMI connection and causing the cable box to block it. As user above me noted, direct connect to TV is best test method to eliminate source ( for now, as links through on HDMI chain can cause issues )

The main reason for that is they implemented HDCP into the format.......

Just make sure you get a pre-pro (like the Emotiva UMC-1) or a receiver that is capable of converting HDMI to analog Component 1080i Video.

A lot of receivers will convert analog to HDMI, not not vice versa.

Just an update for any that might care...or perhaps a person who googles this problem in the future.

Everything works fine now. Just had to update the cable box to upconvert the signal. Can't handle 480i over HDMI.

Thanks everybody.

Thanks for the update/resolution. That show true class on your part.

Many people upon getting the answer to their problem, either here or via other sources, simply go away leaving us guessing.

Again, my thanks.

Yup, that's EXACTLY what my wild guess was.
