I'm hooking up my HT and seem to be having a few issues. My equipment is as follows:

Yamaha RX-V863 Receiver (2 hdmi in, 1 hdmi out)
Xbox 360 Elite (w/ hdmi)
Samsung 52" LN52A550 LCD TV (3 hdmi in)
Cable box (1 HDMI)

The way I have it configured is correct unless I'm misunderstanding HDMI. I've run the xbox & the cable box to the receiver HDMI in's and then the receiver to the TV via the HDMI out (on the receiver). This should allow me to completely disable the sound on the television, right? Apparently this isn't the case. I can play movies/games, etc. and get the sound from the receiver by switching the receiver to 'DVD' since the hdmi cable out to the xbox is plugged into the receiver slot marked DVD. However, when watching cable TV, I get video but no sound.

I've switched cables and it still doesn't work if it's going out to the cable box. I've used the 'sattelite/cable' hdmi port in the receiver with the xbox and it works which leads me to believe it's nothing in the hardware.

I'm not sure if it is significant but i currently only have a front speaker and the sub hooked up (I'm waiting on the rest of my speakers to come in). I wanted to get the receiver and everything hooked up so all I have to do is wire in the speakers once they arrive. Anyhow, any suggestions would be appreciated.

HDMI was an evolving standard and while HDMI 1.1 and HDMI 1.2 were supposed to pass sound and video, but they usually only pass video. HMDI 1.3tends to work on all devices passing both sound and video. Check with your cable company and ensure your cable box is at the HDMI 1.3 level; depending how old the cable box is in might need to be upgrade. An even better upgrade for PQ would be to replace with satellite ( DishNetwork or DirecTV). :D Worst case you might have to run separate audio cables in addition to The HDMI cable from your cable box.

Hooking up only you front speakers and sub should not have any effect on your sound.

Good luck!

Cable box

I think the problem lies in the settings of your cable box. In Most cable boxes you have to go into their settings menu and turn HDMI on for audio...its default setting is not hdmi.

I don't know why you would think that HDMI 1.1 and 1.2 would "usually" only pass video. Perhaps you are thinking of a situation where somebody would use a switching only receiver and have to run separate audio cables beside the HDMI for HT. I doubt you will find a cable/sat box that is anything but HDMI 1.1, since there aren't broadcast souces greater than 720p/1080i and none that broadcast HD audio codecs that require HDMI 1.3a. Loss of the audio portion cannot be attributed to the version of HDMI. Most likely, the issue lies somewhere in the settings.

It could be that HDMI audio needs to be enabled in the set top box, as mentioned above. It could be that the coaxial audio setting is engaged for the cable input on the receiver. Ususally, the HDMI audio input is set as default in the receiver for inputs labelled on the HDMI ports, but can be altered in the digital audio settings menu to choose digital coax for the input. A quick run through the audio setting menus for HDMI and digital audio should confirm how they are set up.
