additionally...

The HTPC output will be DVI and so will the VID2DVIDTV. Can I use a Y adapter and just shut one or the other off or do I really need to buy a $300 switch? If I don't buy a switch what happens if I accidentally have them both on at the same time?

A decent cable, up to about 50 feet is fine. I would go with http://www.bluejeanscable.com - not the best prices, but some of the most well made cables out there, and solid customer service if you have an issue.

I would NOT Y them. Didn't even know there was a Y-adapter for them for that matter. The tolerance is simply to tight. You can manually switch them if you want, or just pick one to be run over component.

Of course, there's always my favorite question...
Why even put your components at the front of the room? Your projector is at the BACK of the room? :)

Just something I ask as I try to get components out of the line of site as their blinking lights and LED readouts are distracting to the movie watching experience IMO.

I second the blue jeans cable... I have a 45 foot HDMI cable from them that works beautifully.

spoke to bluejeanscable and i'm just going to place the order for cables at that length. that converter/scaler looks a bit shady and the price works out almost the same to just buy cables in that length. one s-video/composite/component & hdmi at 30ft runs like $320.
