For hooking up a DVD player would the 28 AWG cable be good enough or should I go fo a 24AWG cable? The length would be 6 feet.

For that distance, the 28 ga should be fine. Just remember for the future, if you need longer cable, get the highest ga you can find.

28AWG should be good to 16 feet according to the HDMI spec. High quality 24AWG cables should be good to about 50 feet.
