Hello,

I have the TH-50PHD7UY 50" HDTV Plasma Television and will be connecting it up to the Yahmaha RX-2500 receiver and Yahmaha DVD-C950 DVD changer.

My DVD player has an HDMI output and the receiver does not. I was going to purchase to module for the TV so that I could plug in the HDMI from the DVD directly to the TV. My question is, will the audio from the dvd still go to the receiver and not the TV (TV has no speakers)? I have a coaxial and optical line hooked up from the DVD to Receiver now.

Also, does anyone know what connections are on the back of Comcast's HDTV box? Do they have a HDMI out? If so, does this mean I need 2 HDMI boards for my TV so I may connect both the cable and DVD to TV for best picture quality? As before, can I still run sound to the receiver though?

Thank you,

Yes, you still need to send the audio to the receiver via the optical or digital coax but don't need both.

TY, and am I also correct that I'll need 2 HDMI boards on my TV? There is no way to "link" the one from the DVD and one from the cable box?

If the receiver does not have HDMI inputs or outputs and the TV has only one HDMI input, then you will need to purchase an HDMI switch box. http://www.gefen.com is one manufacturer of such devices.

Thanks, I guess one issue may be, my cable box has a DVI out and my DVD player has HDMI. My TV also has HDMI. Can I connect 1 DVI and 1 HDMI into the switcher and then have it go out to the HDMI on the TV? Which switcher model would be the right one?

Also, it may actually be cheaper for me to get the extra HDMI on the TV as it is around $140 and the switchers appear to be more.

Thank you,

DVI to HDMI can be solved with a cable as they are pin compatible (although DVI only carries the video). I don't know if there are switches that accept DVI in and output over HDMI, but gefen might offer one. As far as I know, they are the industry leader for HDMI switches.

TY.

Do DVI and HDMI carry the same quality of video?

I am not worried about audio as I will be running that to the receiver via either optical coax or digital. The TV is really just a montior... no speakers.... great picture though:)

dvi/hdmi are interchangable for the most part

For video/you can use dvi/hdmi interchangebely. If the content is copy-proteced the HDCP is needed on the display, and it can either have dvi or hdmi input. As for Audio HDMI is coming out with specs and revisions here and there so I would wait.

Go to www.monoprice.com for cheap and certified HDMI cables and switches.

Thank you. Those prices for the switcher are cheap. And what is HDCP?

Also, are DVI and HDMI port the same size/interchangable? Since I think the cable box has DVI and my DVD/CD player has HDMI, can I connect those 2 cables inot the switcher and then send one HDMI cable out to the TV? In all cases, the audio will be going to my receiver.

Thanks Again,

HDCP is a content protection- or rather copy protection feature that devices support. In order to playback certain movies, tv shows, and so on you need this HDCP feature- if you don't have it then your video quality will not be up to par- it would not be considered high definition because it will be downgraded.

Dvi and Hdmi are two different standards and they use different cables, however since it is digital- you can buy adapters- or cables and interchange it. For example, you can have an HDMI output on the your cable box and connect it to the dvi input on your monitor or tv. All you need is either an hdmi to dvi adapter or a hdmi to dvi cable.

Note: Make sure that the dvi display you wan't to connect to had HDCP- it should be in the specifications, most HDMI displays support this HDCP feature- I won't get into the technicalities of HDCP, but you need it if the movie or show requires it.

OK, I have the HDMI card for the TV. The DVD has HDMI and the HDTV cable box is DVI. I am goint to get a DVI to HDMI cable, a switch box so I can plug in my DVD and cable and another HDMI cable to connect the switch box to the TV.

In unrelated news, I wanted to purchase speakers for my second TV to replace some 20+ year old kenwoods. Something decent but cheap. Plus I only need L/R/C not surround. Well I ended up getting the Athena Point 5 speakers and the best price I could find online was for 4 S.5's and 1 C.5. I got all 5 for <$200:)

PS - I also ordered an HSU STF-1 subwoofer to go with them.
