Hi everyone.
Today I purchased my first bigscreen TV. The Toshiba 56HMX96. Basically I bought it so that I can finally run my PS3 on HDMI.
The picture is absolutely fabulous but the sound coming from the TV is horrible. Prior to this TV I was running my PS3 off of component and had my audio in my Home Sterio system. (It's just a generic 2 speaker sterio but puts out really great sound)
I would like to continue using my sterio for the sound but I don't know really anything about HDMI.

Is it possible to keep the video coming from HDMI and still run the red and white cables to my Home Sterio? On the back of the TV there is a line pointing from the HDMI input to the audio ports for RCA so I thought simply plugging them in there would work but nothing happened.

I read through all 3 of the manuals and couldn't find an answer there and likewise on the Toshiba website. So really I don't know if this is a wiring issue or perhaps a setting that needs to be adjusted on the TV or the PS3.

Any input anyone could offer would be much appreciated.

Yes, you can use both cables to get good sound. Unless Sony has stupidly disabled that ability on the PS3, all the other older consoles I've worked with will output from all the ports, provided they are turned on. So yes, just run the stereo audio to your stereo and the HDMI to the TV.

I have tried that and I still get no sound, it still comes direct from the TV. The front of my sterio has a graphic disply showing when there is sound and nothing displays there either. I put a CD in the sterio just to make sure it's hooked up properly and it worked.

It sounds like Sony might be that crazy. Check the settings in your PS3. There might be something in a menu that allows both to be enabled at the same time.

It sounds like you are hooking up the RCA Red/White cables from your TV to your Stereo. That may work but it might require a setting change in your TV setup.

Can you hook up the RCA Red/White cables from your PS3 directly to your Stereo? There seems to be a PS3 setting to enable audio over the different outputs (HDMI, Digital Optical, or Audio Input Connector or AV MULTI). Try setting this to "Audio Input Connector or AV MULTI".

I tried that as well. I made sure the video output was set to HDMI and I changed the audio output to Audio Input Connector or AV MULTI and the only thing this seems to affect is that it stops all sound completely.

I was at this for hours last night and tried every combo of settings I could think of. I'm going to contact Toshiba when their offices open up and hopefully their support people have encountered this and may have a solution.

Ok Guys,
I just got off the phone with Toshiba and the support guy said that this TV cannot convert a digital signal such as HDMI into an analog signal like the red/white cables.
He basically said that I'd have to buy a new stereo that can do digital sound

I found that to be kind of odd. As I mentioned before there's a line drawn on the back of the TV showing a connection between the HDMI and the Red/White connections so I naturally assumed it was possible, but apparently not.

So looks like I gotta fork out more cash

You are doing things incorrectly.

The red/white connectors next to the HDMI input is for analog left/right INPUT into the TV, not audio output! This is in case you are using a DVI video source, like an older Oppo DVD player. Great digital video, but audio is not carried over DVI, so you have to put it in over analog audio connections.

With the PS3, you want to set your video to HDMI and your audio to A/V multi. This should give you your video as you expect it and then deliver audio over the red/white (and now worthless yellow) connector that comes out of the back of the PS3. Connect the RCA red/white cables from the PS3 directly to your TV and then loop the TV's audio out jack back to your A/V receiver (if your TV has audio out). If the TV does not have audio out, then you should take the PS3 RCA red/white analog audio jacks straight to your A/V receiver and use your A/V receiver all the time for listening to audio.

MAN!! YOUR ARE AWESOME!!! :D

I feel incredibly stupid now, but you were 100% right. I was focus'd on that line running from the HDMI to the Red and White plugs that I didn't even realise that they were IN but I needed to look for OUT.
One minor difference from what you had said though. I didn't need to change any settings, just by moving the plugs over to OUT I was able to get sound from my stereo. So I guess what the rep from Toshiba told me was bull; the only thing hooked up back there now is just an HDMI from the PS3 and the 2 audio cables going to the stero so this TV CAN convert from digital to analog.

Thank you so much, you've just saved my a huge headache and potential alot more money :D

That would be a first; there are no TVs that I have ever seen that will convert analog to digital. Analog in->analog out is the only way it works.

If you connect HDMI to the TV that is for video only. Analog to the TV input and analog out from the TV to the stereo will work or you could just connect the analog audio direct to the TV.

Glad you got it working, but I think you are confused as to how it is working.

Pretty sure he's using analog audio outputs and the TV is doing digital to analog conversion, not analog to digital. So, HDMI in via HDMI, TV converts it to analog, then spits out audio through the TVs internal speakers as well as analog line level output through the 'line out' jacks on the back.

It is a bit suprising that it accomplishes the D/A conversion internally... but just a bit.
