HDMI audio issue.

Hello Audioholics,

I have a question/problem that you guys may be able to clarify real quick. Here is my equipment

AV Receiver Onkyo HT-R580
Video card: Asus EAH5770 1gig RAM
TV: Toshiba 40RV525U

So I have my PS3 connected to the AV Receiver through HDMI. Works great.

I have my Dish Network receiver connected through Color stream cables and works fine.

What I also got connected to the receiver through HDMI is my computer via its Video card. The video looks great but sound is where I am having my issue. At times it sounds fine, usually music but when I want to play videos the sound gets choppy, kind of like it cuts in and out. It’s more prevalent during videos but it can happen when I play a game or music. I tried a different HDMI cable and I get the same results. My computer sound audio is set to the HDMI of the video card.

I am new to home audio theater systems. Any help would be appreciated.

It sounds like the problem is simply that the computer is having a difficult time maintaining a high enough frame rate. Audio + video over HDMI requires a lot of bandwidth and a lot of processing power.

You can try to kill background processes that are not necessary and turn off (temporarily) and anti-virus software to lessen the load on the CPU.

I have a quadcore q6600 with 4 gig ram. Task manager shows 3gigs ram available would that be enough?


I bought a 1.4 HDMI cable and it helped a lot but still sound stutters every so often.

Anymore ideas?

How do you have the setting on Windows Playback Devices?

Do you have an ATI or NVIDIA or integrated graphics/sound?


Do you have the latest Audio/Vidoe drivers?

I bet it has something to do with the setting somehow.

For example, is it bitstreaming (PASS-THROUGH) the audio to your receiver or decoding the sound first and send PCM to your receiver?

the video card is an Asus 5770 which is from the ATI/AMD family.

I updated the drivers (download from ATI) and fixed my problem.
I must of had old drivers that didnt have good HDMI sound support.
