HDMI as video only???

I'm just about to replace my aging projector, and as pretty much all current models have HDMI, and as I have an upconverting DVD player with HDMI but a non-HDMI RX-V2500, I was wondering whether you could run video directly to the projector through the HDMI while running the audio as coax to the receiver? Eventually I'm sure I'll also move to some HD format once things settle, so it will be a bigger question then, rather than a matter of convenience now. Thanks.

Thanks! I didn't think they'd make it so HDMI had to run through a processor to retrieve the audio, but then not all engineers think the way I do...

That's exactly how I have my Optoma pj hooked up, with HDMI coming from the Oppo player for video and an optical cable going to the receiver for Digital sound.

I have the same arrangemet. HDMI from my Dish Network HD DVR to my Epson 550 projector and optical cable to my Denon 3805.
