Hi,

Are there any HDTVs that are HDMI 1.3 compliant?
I am looking at the Pioneer PDP 5070 Plasma. However it is only 1.1 compliant. Also I am holding off on a Receiver purchase until Denon comes out with a 1.3 compliant receiver.

The PS3, as far as I know, right now is the only HDMI 1.3 device in the world. There will likely be many more that are shown in early January, likely as prototypes, at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES).

If I were to take a guess, it likely will be a few months into 2007 when we first start to see any HDMI plasmas and receivers hit the market, but I fully expect Denon to have something. Perhaps Panasonic with a plasma, but it is hard to tell. I think HDMI messed up big time by not having HDMI finalized well before CEDIA 2006 so that manufacturers could incorporate the technology into new products for the holiday season.

A month or so and HDMI 1.3 will likely have a much clearer picture of what will be available.

Great question! Amazing the PS3 is the only current device! I love that for them,,,,,,but I agree......HDMI missed the boat big time by not having 1.3 ready for the holidays. Side note: The PS3 only works with late model HDTV's....something about scan rate???? Just read that.

From the most current magazines I just read, HDMI 1.3 will be here early in '07 on a lot of sources including receivers. Probably mainstream by March as mentioned above?

My alarming concern is what about the folks who bought the latest Denon 5805? Are they screwed by not having the latest HDMI 1.3 inputs? Is this upgradeable through a port? Thanks.

The alarming concern should be that it doesn't matter whether you get an HDMI 1.3 player at this point, because nothing out there can display a picture in 1.3. You have to have everything in that connection be able to transmit and receive in 1.3. I'd wait until that's the case, before buying ANYTHING at this point...

Agreed and Poll.

I agree with what you are saying but once I buy a HDMI 1.3 compliant recreiver and TV, I figure I won't have to upgrade for a long while. Even if there is a 1440P down the road, that won't be justification enough for me.

In the interim I will be buying some real nice speakers and an el cheapo but half way decent receiver (Denon 887 or below). I had my Denon receiver and Boston Acoustics speakers burglarized about 2 yrs ago so I get to start from scratch.

What is everyone else doing in the interim? Are you holding off on a Receiver and HDTV purchase? If so for how long?

Waiting will be my game.....

Until the HDMI 1.3 format is applied across the realm of electronics.

I believe 2009 will be a great year for consumers wanting to get into the HD game.

Excuse my ignorance but what is the deal with HDMI 1.3?? Is this gonna be a huge issue in the future? And will you need both a TV and receiver that is HDMI 1.3 or just 1 or the other to take care of it? I am new to all this and trying to learn as much as possible before diving into the HD realm and making any "big" purchases:D

This is the deal with HDMI 1.3 - taken directly from hdmi.org:

New HDMI 1.3 capabilities include:

*
Higher speed: HDMI 1.3 increases its single-link bandwidth from 165MHz (4.95 gigabits per second) to 340 MHz (10.2 Gbps) to support the demands of future high definition display devices, such as higher resolutions, Deep Color and high frame rates. In addition, built into the HDMI 1.3 specification is the technical foundation that will let future versions of HDMI reach significantly higher speeds.
*
Deep color: HDMI 1.3 supports 30-bit, 36-bit and 48-bit (RGB or YCbCr) color depths, up from the 24-bit depths in previous versions of the HDMI specification.
o
Lets HDTVs and other displays go from millions of colors to billions of colors
o
Eliminates on-screen color banding, for smooth tonal transitions and subtle gradations between colors
o
Enables increased contrast ratio
o
Can represent many times more shades of gray between black and white. At 30-bit pixel depth, four times more shades of gray would be the minimum, and the typical improvement would be eight times or more
*
Broader color space: HDMI 1.3 removes virtually all limits on color selection.
o
Next-generation “xvYCC” color space supports 1.8 times as many colors as existing HDTV signals
o
Lets HDTVs display colors more accurately
o
Enables displays with more natural and vivid colors
*
New mini connector: With small portable devices such as HD camcorders and still cameras demanding seamless connectivity to HDTVs, HDMI 1.3 offers a new, smaller form factor connector option.
*
Lip Sync: Because consumer electronics devices are using increasingly complex digital signal processing to enhance the clarity and detail of the content, synchronization of video and audio in user devices has become a greater challenge and could potentially require complex end-user adjustments. HDMI 1.3 incorporates an automatic audio/video synching capability that allows devices to perform this synchronization automatically with accuracy.
*
New lossless audio formats: In addition to HDMI’s current ability to support high-bandwidth uncompressed digital audio and currently-available compressed formats (such as Dolby® Digital and DTS), HDMI 1.3 adds additional support for new, lossless compressed digital audio formats Dolby® TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio™.

It could potentially be a big deal for you if any of these capabilities are of interest to you.

The dependency is application specific. If you worried about audio, then you'll want a source component and preamp/receiver that has both. If it's video, then source component and monitor/TV need to match. It's not that 1.3 won't work with 1.1 or 1.2, you just probably won't get some or all of the features listed.

Also, there is no saying that spec 1.4 couldn't be introduced tomorrow and just add more confusion. That is extremely unlikely, but don't underestimate the A/V industry's willingness to over complicate everything!!
