Hi.

My question is in regards to hooking up a high definition satelite receiver to my Denon. The Denon does not have a DVI connection this is where my question lies. I have been told by one dealer that a DVI cable hhoked up directly from the satelite receiver to the DVI connection on my TV is the way to go. Another dealer told me that using component video cables and the component video inputs on the 3805 were the way to go.
Can someone shed some light on this. Which way would give me a better high definition picture. The TV being used is a Hitachi 51 inch wide screen.

Thanks in advance.

The DVI (or HDMI for that matter) connection will probably give you the best picture. With that said you will not be losing much switching your HD Sat box through the 3805. I have both HD Sat and progressive scan DVD switched through my 3805 and could not detect any degradation in the picture quality. I'm using two component inputs and one component output from my receiver. One caveat though, when watching a component source switched through the 3805 you will not see the basic OSD information like master volume. This only works with a non component source like s-video. You will still see the system OSD information but it blacks out the picture. This is similar to other receivers and not unique to Denon.

HDMI Follow-up Question

If you bypass the 3805 and go direct to the monitor for video using HDMI, how do you obtain the audio benefits for the theater effects? Do you use component output from the monitor back into the 3805?

Is there a receiver that allows throughput using HDMI? I have a Panasonic Plasma display that allows HDMI input and a HD Sat with HDMI output. Similar question but I would like to have a receiver with the same sourcing capabilities.

Component never carries the audio. And I don't think the audio portion of HDMI is fully compatible with all manufacturers meaning there are not a lot of components with HDMI connections other than DVD players and newer HDTV's. With the HDMI carring your video you would still use your digital connection, either Toslink or coax, to your receiver for audio. The new Denon 5805 has HDMI inputs and there are a few others out there. But not many yet. It will be nice if the promise of HDMI to carry audio and video comes to fruition in the next few years.
