HD TV to sony receiver connection questions

I have a Panasonic TH-42PX75U , Sony STR-DG510 5.1 receiver and a Zenith DVB 812 DVD player. Can I hook my Directv HD SAT receiver to the receiver and the DVD player to the receiver through the HDMI inputs and hook the receiver HDMI out to the Television? I have read that you hook the sat to the tv (which it is now) and then hook the DVD to the receiver and then audio component to the TV from the receiver. Am I making sense? I want the best setup that I can get with the best sound.

First, please check that model # for your Zenith.

Yes, you can run HDMI from both the satellite box and the dvd player through the receiver and out to the tv via HDMI.
(the Sony receiver has two hdmi inputs and one hdmi output, correct?)

Another option, which some folks like to do, is to send the video signals from satellite and/or dvd players to the television and send the audio signal to the receiver.

Video is sent via hdmi or component cables.
Audio is sent via optical (toslink) or digital coaxial cables.

Either system works. Both systems will give you a proper set-up. Give them a try to see which you think is best.

cyberbo60, often you will find in the owner's manual a hook-up section that describes the options as good, better, best. Take your time, it will be worth the effort. Good luck.

I have the same receiver and direct tv and the mitsubishi 57 inch dlp
Heres a weird problem I have found with the receiver even though both video and audio is delivered thru hdmi which is preferred for both this receiver for some reason will only input the video. I have hook hdmi cable from my sat out to receiver hdmi input (video 2) and hdmi cable from my dvd out to receiver hdmi dvd input. And then i have connected the receiver hdmi out to one of the tv's hdmi inputs. With this setup which whould work in a optimum setup well it doesnt all i get is video no sound. I have to hook the optical output from the sat box to the receiver video 2 opt and the dvd will only accept a dig coax input which i have to use to get digital sound let alone any sound at all form the hdmi inputs and outputs int this receiver how crazy is this?
