HD Recording and Capturing. Please Help.

I am interested in buying a device to record and capture videos from my Playstation 3. There are many different setups, methods, and products, but Im not sure about it all.

Here is an overview on sony's forums:

http://boardsus.playstation.com/playstation/board/message?board.id=ps3&message.id=3497832&query.id=80823#M3497832

The main product options Ive come across are the dazzle, the hava, and the HD PVR

Dazzle: http://www.pinnaclesys.com/PublicSite/us/Products/Consumer+Products/Dazzle/Dazzle+Video+Archiving/Dazzle+Video+Creator+Plus.htm

Hava: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7t0Y96if40c&feature=related

And HD PVR: http://www.hauppauge.com/site/products/data_hdpvr.html

My two choices seem to be between the hava and the HD PVR because they both provide more connection options than the dazzle. The dazzle just provides the composite and s video inputs, whereas the other two provide component, and coaxial as well.

My question is which of the devices will allow me to record hd gameplay videos. I have a component wire running from my ps3 which I would connect to the capture device. From what I understand, this component cable allows me up to 1080i. I am not always able to play on an HD tv however. So sometimes I have a composite wire which I use because the tv doesnt have a component input. So, would I be able to do the following with either of the two aforementioned devices? Could I: capture in hd, but view on my tv as sd. By this, I mean, could I run my hd component cables to the device, thus capturing and recording an hd video, and run a composite cable from the device to the tv, thus watching it in sd. So even though Im recording hd, could I view it sd on my tv since it doesnt have an hd input? Or, can a component signal not be converted to composite? Also, I do sometimes have the option of playing on an hd tv. In this case I would run a component cable to the device and then ANOTHER component cable to the tv. This would allow me to play and record in hd. An Im pretty sure this is available and common.

Here is a youtube video of someone who has recorded in hd. In the bottom right of the video click watch in hd. They quality is amazing.

I have messaged this person and I hope to find out their set up and get some answers from them. But my concern would still be, is it possible to record in hd while playing in sd? I know the opposite is true. Some devices allow you to view your normal hd picture on your tv, while it converts the video that is being captured on you laptop to 480 sd. Thanks for any help.

The Hauppauge should accept an HD input from component video. It should work. I do not own a PS3 and have limited experience with them other than setting up in customers systems. As far as I know the PS3 will only output through ONE of the three possible connections (HDMI, Component, Composite) at a time. If that is the case then you would not be able to simultaneously use the component and composite outputs.

As far as the YouTube video is concerned, it seems pretty obvious to me that they simply setup a camcorder in front of the TV. The picture is crooked... The quality is also nowhere near HD. Not even SD.

Sorry to resurrect this, but I stumbled upon this site just a little while after this question was posed:

They have multiple solutions to video game capturing. It's probably a little on the expensive side if you don't want to create a platform for yourself, but it's used extensively in the professional world so you know it's reliable.

The TrueHD Express Upgrade card sounds like what you need provided you have a powerful enough PC to capture/process.
