Can someone please explain the reason why my dads HD looks worse than my HD? Here are the two set-ups:

Mine:
Charter Cable HD running into an LG 42LB1DR HD 42" LCD t.v.
Looks absolutely stunning. Definitely has a "wow" factor to it.

His:
Dish Network HD running in to a Sony FD Trinitron WEGA KV-34XBR800 34" t.v. (standard CRT "fatback" t.v.)
Looks pretty good, but is still a little "fuzzy". Looks only marginally better than a DVD. No real "wow" factor.

Both t.v.'s are capable of producing a 1080i HD picture, so why the difference? I am sure it has to do with the inherent differences between LCD vs. CRT, but I don't know enough about it to explain to him.

Thanks in advance!!

Could be calibration or the fact that Dish likes to compress the heck out of their HD channels. I'm assuming you were watching actual HD sources on both (like prime time television dramas? Preferably the same show on each.)

Your LCD is also brighter, which tends to have the effect of making you think it's better.

Yeah, specifically I am comparing the ads they run on Discover HD Theater on both t.v.'s. There is no question that mine is crisper. (mine is brighter too)

Also, his does not seem to have the same response time as mine. The same ads appear to be much more of a "slide show" on his. My LCD has a response time of 8ms, shouldn't his be better than mine since it is a CRT?

You also are sure that your dad has component/hdmi connectivity to the display and that it is setup for 1080i/720p output?

CRTs generally have an image that is considered to kick the crud out of most other displays. But, digital displays can look sharper than CRTs due to the fixed pixel structure they offer.

Really, the best way to get an apples to apples comparison is to hook your dad's tv up to your cable box.

Yeah, this may be an exercise in futility. His incoming signal and mine are probably not exactly the same, thus the difference.

He is currently running component video cable. Would we see much improvement if we went to DVI? (His t.v. has an input for that, but I am not sure if the cable box has an output...)
