HD-DVD should be more aggressive in light of Blu-Ray delays

Sony and Pioneer have announced further delayed initial release dates for their first BD Players. I don't understand why Toshiba and the HD-DVD group are not more aggressive in trying to penetrate the market as much as possible during this period. You would think that the studios that support HD-DVD would be cranking out as many titles as possible, getting them on the shelves at the local Walmart.

I realize that Sony's ace-in-the-hole is PS3, but this would be a great time to get the public to think that the next-generation discs are "HD-DVD" and that Blu-ray will be a "gaming" format.

Just a though for the marketing wizzes out there...

Nobody is too quick to drop lots of dollars into these untested formats yet.

Look at what's happening with SACD and DVD-Audio. The few (and, yes, we are FEW in the real world) bleeding edge fanatics are screaming but Joe Sixpack, who shops at the Big Box stores and Walmart, whose dollars REALLY count, is sitting back waiting for a clear cut winner to emerge.

And, the only reason Joe embraced CD's over vinyl and cassettes is because of convenience, not sound. The sound of SACD and DVD-Audio doesn't faze him one bit. ...same thing here. He's probably using composite video at best.

I've already seen ads for Blu-Ray discs. I haven't seen any[i/] ads for HD-DVD. It simply doesn't make sense. One would think they'd be marketing like crazy.

Widescreen Review has them listed and are reviewing them, somehow.

They are advertising like crazy in Home Theater magazine... Up to this point I believe that Toshiba has been a joke in retail stores though. Unlike the X-Box 360 approach that had a ton of buzz and excellent kiosk displays everywhere, it is still tough to find where the HD-DVD display even IS in your local Best Buy.

Joe Six Pack (J6P) will have a Blu-ray player this year. If nothing else, PS3 will put the words Blu-ray Disc into millions of homes while HD-DVD is still trying to figure out what a kiosk is. ;)

No, really, I love the image of HD-DVD, but I just don't think that they have the marketing in place and enough industry support overall to trump Blu-ray. But, that's right now - things could always change.

Well, just on video quality, their market right now is very small, us who know such things, not the average consumer.
The Ps3 is a different issue. It has a video game crowd waiting for it. I think that crowd is a bit larger:D
However, when the HD TV penetrates the consumer marketplace, then the market numbers will be there. When is the question:)

Yes it is sad Joe is a person who wouldn’t care if the music he was listening to was playing a great system or the $20 boom box he bought along with his backstreet boys cd...there are just those people who appreciate music and those who just listen

And I don’t know if you have heard but Sony the originator of SACD I believe has recently quit backing them I have the feeling unfortunately that they will soon be fading out...btw does anyone know a place with a good selection of SACD only retail place I have found is a few select Best Buys
