You will get a regular picture same as you would from a DVD player, non-HD.

Yes, it most likely will but it is still a SD DVD, and the HD player will not improve on it anymore than a DVD player would by up-converting.
I think he may have implied in his question if an HD DVD player would improve a SD DVD.

The Blu-ray player I just reviewed served as an excellent quality scaler for SD DVDs. The picture and audio quality was on par with more expensive flagship DVD players.

What specifically do you want to know?

Right now the format war is getting off a bit rocky on both sides. While HD-DVD is getting out of the gates stronger than Blu-ray, they still are lacking a lot of studio support and Toshiba is the single big pusher of the format. Yet, the discs that have hit the market have generally looked excellent and far better than the releases by Blu-ray.

Blu-ray only has a player from Samsung so far with players expected from Sony, Panasonic, and perhaps Pioneer before this holiday season. PS3 is a big (huge) unknown for how it will impact things or what its quality will be.

All current HD disc players from either side will play standard DVDs and upconvert them to HD resolutions. As with other upconverting players it is simply a conversion of DVD material. For true HD quality you must use a HD disc.

I'm still of the belief that if dual format players don't become a reality, then Blu-ray will win due to overwhelming studio and CE support. But, things are early on and HD-DVD supporters can be a bit manic about that format.
