Here's some information from CES on the new Toshiba HD DVD players. They are a lot less expensive than I expected. Hopefully Gene and Clint will have more details shortly.

"Toshiba said it will start selling high-definition players supporting its HD DVD format in the U.S. in March. Toshiba's new HD DVD players, the HD-XA1 and HD-A1, are priced at $799 and $499, respectively."

Hopefull Sony will announce prices for their BD DVD players soon.

Sony hasn't announced any prices for there blu-ray players yet, but pioneer and samsung have.

The Pioneer Elite will debut at $1800 US with 1080p output and the Samsung will be $1000 US without 1080p output.

I can't wait for this battle to get under way. The war of words has gotten really old and taken some of the excitement out of the air (for me anyway). Let's see what these things can do already.

Looks like HD-DVD did what they had to do. Sell their players for a loss to get people to jump on board (I'm assuming that $499 will not be profitable).

You got that right. Let's let the two formats duke it out while I wait on the sidelines for awhile. This wait has been long but nothing like the original DVD wait. The original wait was around eight years long!

Just saw that Crutchfield already has the Toshiba HD-A1 available for pre-order. No info on when they will actually be available, but you can see some more information on the product and some pics.

Personally, I don't think it is that attractive - kind of reminiscent of an 80s style VCR, but I guess what comes out of it is more important.

It's also available for preorder on Best Buy's website. I'm going to go ahead and guess that you can preorder it other places as well.
