Hey I'm fairly new to home theatre and I've been reading that Blu-ray and HD DVD will be downgraded to 940X540 or something instead of running at full 1920X1080 high def via component to stop piracy. I was wondering if all models are the same and downgrading everything or if there are some models that will not downconvert. The problem is, is that my tv is older and only has component hookups. No DVI or hdmi, so am I stuck with a tv that wont be able to take full advantage of the next gen players??

You should be able to get 1080i/720p via component, you just won't be able to get 1080p. And since your TV doesn't have DVI/HDMI it will be extremely unlikely that your set will have 1080p capability.

Hey, thanks for the advice! My tv is only runs at 1080i. It's an older style crt and it't only 26 inches so if it did have 1080i it would be extremely unlikely that I could tell the difference anyways. I'm a big fan of HD DVD and am cheering for it all the way. The entry level players seem much better than the samsung and sony Blu-ray players I've seen. The picture seems much more film-like than blu-ray right now at a huge discount over Blu-ray. I think that's the way I'll go. Thanks!

I've read more reports about issues with the HD-DVD players vs BD, but none have a perfect record so... I use a PS3 and so far the results have been very impressive. I will be supporting BluRay, but I don't really care which one "wins". I don't know where you saw BluRay but they look absolutely identical to me. From reading on the DTS site I also noticed that HD-DVD has limitations for DTS-HD the audio side that BluRay does not (which I don't understand), so for now I will be sticking with BD.

That would be the "Image Constraint Token", if a disc has the ICT flag on it, it will only allow the component output a max resolution of 960 by 540.

however, not every disc has the ICT, and so far to my knowledge, no studio has said that they will be using it :)rolleyes: ).

But if someone knows more about the ICT, please share. :)

I think the DTS-HD limitation on HD-DVD is based on size limitations for the disc.

I support HD-DVD because I got an A1 a few months ago for $75 over retail with 17 movies...couldnt resist.

I will be getting a new XA2 for the downstairs HT and maybe a PS3 in the future.
