:) I probably already answered my own question?, Can I buy one of the new formats and play on my reg DVD player and one day upgrade to the new format? My thinking is, I won't have to duplicate the same movies twice? Thought I would post this dump question?

Blue Ray/HD-DVD played on a regular DVD player: NO
DVD played on a Blue Ray/HD-DVD player: YES

Simply put the HD players use a Blue laser with a much shorter wavelength (hence Blue Ray) than the red laser used in a regular DVD player.

Nope, your standard dvd player will not play HD or Blu Ray discs. In order to play a Blu Ray dvd, you will need a Blu Ray player. Likewise for HD dvd. Currently, each is proprietary. I don't believe there are any players out yet that will play both formats. Both a HD and Blu Ray players will play standard dvds, and upconvert them.

a very few HD DVD's come with both HD and standard DVD layers, but other than those half dozen or so the new discs are not backwards compatible with old players like the other posts say.
