I bought a yamaha rx-v2600 earlier this week and am wondering if I made the right decision since I am kind of new to audio. I noticed that hddvd's will be supporting two new sound formats.... are these significant upgrades ?? and should I return my unit and wait for the new yamaha that most likely will support these formats. Will it take time for dolby and dts to master these formats ??? I am thinking about returning my av even though it has had tons and tons of great reviews ............ any help or advice would be appreciated
thanks,
scott

Live happily with the decision you made...

It will be a while before high definition sound will become the standard in home theater. The ironic part is that there isn't even a standard yet in high definition video (blue-ray vs. hd-dvd). The ability to transfer a high definition sound signal through hdmi isn't even available yet... Why you ask? We're still waiting on HDMI version 1.3 to come out and provide us with those capabilities. Even funnier is that we're still on HDMI 1.1 and HDMI 1.2 will probably start shipping at the end of the year (correct me if I'm wrong someone). Add to that the fact that there are not even any movies available (not even the first batches of HD-DVD and Blue-Ray releases) with the new sound format . Finally, even when a receiver with HDMI 1.3 capabilities becomes available, along with titles to play high definition audio, the technology will be so cost-prohibitive that most people would want to probably wait at least a year or two before diving in. ALl in all, probably 3-5 years...

Enjoy your receiver, it's a nice one...

Phantom of the Opera has Dolby TrueHd 5.1.

And I think most manf's will be skipping HDMI 1.2 and going straight to 1.3

Apparently Training Day has a Dolby TrueHD 5.1 track also. But, Toshiba state that both their players only support 2 channel Dolby TrueHD

cheers:)

Not sure that rx-v2600 have HDMI. But HDMI 1.1 can handel DD+. HD-DVD player will decode DD+ and send digital signal to your receiver, Digital to Analog Converter (DAC) in your receiver will handle the rest.

All HD-DVDs that recently launched have DD+. Fews have DD TrueHD.

Another option you can do is, use analog connection between your HD-DVD player and receiver. DD+ and DD TrueHD signal will be decode to PCM in player and send PCM to your receiver.

Don't worry

While HDMI V1.1 may handle DD+, my understanding from reading this and some of this Dolby paper on the subject, current receivers with AC-3 decoders can only decode the core data at 640kbps(this is to ensure backward compatibility). So if you want the full benefit of DD+ I think you still need to use the analogue connections or wait for a new receiver with a built in E-AC-3 decoder.

But I don't own a HD-DVD player so I can't confirm any of this, either way I'm going to wait till everything is sorted out with all these new formats, as stated before that may take a while. So, sgrenchik, relax and enjoy your new toy:D

cheers:)

Interesting read, Secrets Product Review of the Toshiba HD-A1 High Definition DVD Player

After reading this I need to correct my earlier post. Apparently it's up to the player to do a down sampling conversion of the DD+ to DD(640kbps) and send it via optical/coax and the original HDMI(v1 or whatever its called) digital connections to be compatible with current receivers. But the Toshiba HD-A1 does not perform this at the moment, what it does is converts the DD+ to PCM and then converts the PCM to DTS to sent over optical/coax and original HDMI digital connections(a bit of conversion going on there).

If using HDMI v1.1 or the analogue connection it converts the DD+(and 2 channel Dolby TrueHD(both Toshiba's HD-DVD players don't support 5.1 Dolby TrueHD yet)) to PCM then up-samples to 96/24 and then sends it as Multichannel PCM over HDMI v1.1 and through the analogue 6 channel outputs(so at the moment these would be the connections to use for best quality until we have receivers with new decoding chips for these new audio formats; DD+, D TrueHD, DTS-HD)

cheers :)
