Ok I am curious. if comcast offers 8 HD stations, and the Dish offers a different 15 stations in HD and IO cable offers mere different ones. Doesnt that mean that all these stations are available in HD and companies just HOLDING back the offerings? What gives

I have Dish, and since they acquired the defunct VOOM HD network, they offer 29 HD channels.

Makes me want to consider DISH over DTV? How is DISH anyway?

Fine till something goes wrong.

*Wind storm breaks dish. Call Dish, "we can have a guy there next week."
"But we can only be home on thursdays."
"Then it'll be 6 weeks."
"OK, be sure to bringt a ladder, its on the roof of a 2 story building."
-6 weeks later-
"Hi, I noticve your dish is on the roof, we don't have a ladder"
"Well I specifically said you'd need a ladder when I called."
"We'll have to send someone else"
-Call Dish-
"We need a guy with a ladder on thursday"
"It'll take 6 more weeks."

Then I got cable.

Then Dish sends me a new reciever(?!?)
They send me a bill for $150 for the reciever
I send dish back
Bill now $206
I call, they say its a mistake.
Bill arrives again $213
I call lawyer
So far no new bills.

I like the Dish HD programing and most of the movies that they show except TNT are uncut. if you add local + Voom chanels you get about 35 i cant remember exactly but its about 35,36.
Sundays are grate because i get every chanel that shows Football in HD including Monday night and Thursday :) .

Then they wonder why they are not bringing or holing on to customers:eek:

My comcast had a volume issue on ABC, +10dB louder. I gave them 2 weeks to come to their senses and fix it on their own. Bad idea.
2 weeks later I called. Service person: Yes, we know of it, numerous calls on it, we are working on it.
2 more weeks, same problem. Call again. Operator: let me talk with supervisor, only one call on this, not an issue. Schedule a 2nd service call, oh, yes, it is not working properly, calls back. Should be fixed soon, here is name and number to call.
several days later, problem fixed.
Why did it take 7-8 weeks?

I've had Dish for about 5 years now without a single problem, but that doesn't seem to be the case with some of you other guys. Anytime a company thinks they have a monopoly, their service goes into the toilet. Remember Geraldine from Laugh-In? "We're the Phone Company. We Don't Care. We Don't Have To.":D

I'm not 100% sure if I'm correct in my next statement but I'll give it a go.

I notice that for the most part my picture quality (PQ) on my 40" LCD thru Direct TV (DTV) standard service (No HD package or receiver) thru a 3rd generation RCA STB with only composite output, Looks very good to excellent depending on which channel I'm Viewing.

The PQ seems to degrade (only on certain channels READ ON) on FootBall Sunday or when there is a abundance of live sports programming. The Live sports channels look excellent and many of the other non-sports channels are less than desirable due to artifacting.

This observation along with reading of the challenge that providers are having with available bandwidth has made me come to the determination that DTV steals bandwidth from normal channels (compressing them even more) to give bandwidth to more popular live sporting events.

Perhaps there is no merit on my above statement, but it seems to happen every time.

I can see a re-birth in the Over the Air (OTA) broadcast with the digital mandate by 2009 and bandwidth that is available (less compressed than cable or satellite) Local OTA providers have a oppertunity to gain back lost viewers. Anyone remember back in the late 70's "ON-TV" ? ON-TV was a equal to HBO except it was broadcast OTA & to obtain you had to subscribe and receive a set top box (STB) that descrambled the channel. Where I lived at the time there was no cable and Satellite was a Plymouth car.

Pressure is on the Providers to provide a higher standard of both SD & HD programming, I just hope it does not take 10 - 20 years for them to catch up to the current Display technology.
